This was a strange, but incredibly rewarding trip. My original plan was to follow the Kenai 250 route but tour it instead of race it. I took a pretty scary fall on day 1 on Bear Lake and it psyched me out. So instead I took a scenic route loosely based off of the 250 and looped in Johnson Pass and Russian River with a fair bit of highway riding from Seward (and also a hike or 2). Near the end of the week, I rented a U-Haul to take my gear up to Anchorage and explore the trails there too. Kincaid was filled with so many moose and flow trails, but ending the trip with the lift assist trails at Hilltop was definitely a relief after so many days of backcountry climbing. This trip taught me a lot about how to understand and digest fear, and I'm stoked I could get that lesson in the most beautiful state in the country (IMO!).

  1. Very cool. I worked on a trail crew on the Kenai in 2006 but haven’t been back since. Hadn’t even thought about it as a bikepacking destination but I can see the potential for sure. Such a beautiful area.
