In today’s episode of Exploring Britain, myself and Chelsea (aka Holiday Expert) head to Darlington for a train heavy visit.
Follow Chelsea if you don’t already: https://www.youtube.com/cheapholidayexpert
Thanks for watching. Let me know in the comments where I should visit next.
this is Exploring Britain the series in which I look at some of the UK’s less publicized town and cities I’m with the artist formerly known as Cheap Holiday Expert And we’re in Darlington Are we in a graveyard yes [Music] Chelsea have you been to Darlington before i have never In fact when you said it I was like not sure where that is Uh it’s a lot more north than I was expecting Where did you think it was like by Norolk What do you know about Darlington absolutely nothing Yeah I’m kind of the same I’ve got no no expectations No no pre what’s the word pre misconceptions No no no pre prenups You’ve got no prenups here No prenups Pre pre You’ve got You know the word I mean no no I think we need some coffee Pre precon precon preconceive [Music] market square or something What’s this it’s very pleasant isn’t it very European Mainland Europe vibes Looks quite grand Yeah And there’s like a sort of like a German clock tower up there as well I thought we’re in Prague Yeah We’re getting Prague vibes Darlington Yeah No Why are there so many taxis i’m getting no Uber vibes I like a place that doesn’t have Uber Look how many taxis there are Like so many So many I wonder if they have their own app Chie I ask people on the Instagram Yes Uh what to do in Darlington Um people always write leave or go away or something like that We’re not going to publicize those people You’re better than that So this says brick train It’s a bit out of town but well worth it for the 185,000 bricks Oh we’ll definitely do that Would you like a brick well it sounds like Lego Is it Lego i bricks See i don’t know Have a trip to the 20,000 seat stand up There’s a lot of like big number things in the area Go to the Golden and then Darlington Market Big train sculpture This train seems the main thing isn’t it Get yourself a palo Live in the northeast for 2 years It’s the only thing I miss Those I know the palmos We should get palos We should definitely get a palo Right First thing whatever this train is Second thing Palmo done This video is sponsored by Darlington very long and we’ve ended up in a Morrison’s car park on the outside town This seems like a trap It does And whatever we’re going to seems quite hidden Yeah They said just go to the back of the Morrison’s car park and you’ll see a massive train made of bricks which doesn’t it seems too weird to make up But what do we do do we just go through the bushes i guess so Have you got any cash on you like what can we give people if we do suddenly get like someone comes along this is so weird down this path Yes This can’t be right This is nature Nature Run a nature walk Should we go over the bridge oh I hope so Look there’s a bridge here Oh I think it’s up here Is it What’s happened Chelsea okay you were right Don’t ever rely on me for any directions So go back and over the bridge Yeah travel expert I think this is the wrong way now Yeah we’re going the wrong direction now Show me the map that way There must be another bridge Okay that way we around this corner Look at this Sorry it’s the nature What is that spider thing maybe it’s But sometimes it’s caterpillars Have you ever seen that before when you see all this webbing people think it’s spiders but there’s loads of caterpillars procreating It’s basically the story of the hungry caterpillar going on right above our heads And uh the bridge there’s loads of this stuff Yeah it must be like the season mating season I don’t know anything about this I know it’s not trains though I think Yeah it’s not train We’re getting distracted Oh my god we’re so close to train Oh what [Music] what’s happening am I in a fever dream why is there a train made entirely of bricks next to a bypass with a lorry lor’s pulling in for a rest stop and Morrison’s behind us What is going on what is up Darlington let’s check it out Look you can go up a ramp I think and get on the above the train Oh my god Let’s do that Doesn’t look safe Robbie Right Your sho Your footwear is not appropriate for this I don’t know I’ve ruined these many times Do you want to hold them and I’ll run up or in pursuit of adventure i’m fine to ruin a pair of You go first and I’ll film you fall over I mean oh god it’s steep Yeah it’s like what’s that at the end of um Gladiators yeah the travel You try I love that you’re sending me first Right we need speed Oh it’s a bit slippy cuz it’s been raining Uhoh Hang on Robbie How on earth am I going to get down i think there might be another way up here There’s another way Honestly it’s probably not worth it Are you joking me is there like steps or something yeah So I went up this path here No No But there is also a path Oh my god Honestly not worth it I slipped so bad Look at this And I’m actually so embarrassed to share this with you I stung myself so badly with nettles Oh my god Oh this is bleak isn’t it pursuit of adventure I really went for it though I really I I went I feel quite bad for making you do this No it’s it’s part of the story It’s part It’s adventure But I have found myself a dock leaf and we might have to go to Morrison’s toilets for me to wash myself Let’s go and wash you in the Morrison’s Can I claim on insurance for that do you reckon i don’t have insurance If it’s your insurance do you like it’s travel insurance i’m on holiday So the sculpture seems to be called Train Could have spent a bit longer on that Look it it does what 1997 Yeah Commissioned by Morrison Supermarket Oh you’d think they would make it more obvious Like can I just say this are very fancy looking Morrison’s over there And they’re commissioning sculptures Morrison’s in Darlington and commissioning poets Unreal I wonder how much they paid David Quick for that Genuinely thank you Why because I feel like I really reconnected with my childhood I haven’t looked down at my hands to see that in like 25 years It’s good isn’t it we should do more outdoor adventures Yeah Yeah Get dirty Run up a stupid hill in stupid boots and think “Oh this will work out.” So the taxi arrived in fairly decent time and now we’re at Hopetown Museum Hopetown Darlington It looks fancy Let’s go up the grand steps Yeah Well Chelsea that man was lovely because so nice So nice And he says he subscribes to both our YouTube channels which is makes him nice Exactly We’re not biased at all at all This is beautiful Brand new museum all about the Stockton Darlington train line I guess So and apparently they’re building a new steam engine somewhere which I I didn’t even know that was a thing What are they going to be like powering it with steam Well okay Have you seen what they’ve got in the play area though what’s that they’ve got like they’ve recreated like coal wagons Oh yeah You can go and sit in a coal wagon Gosh it’s cool being a kid isn’t it it’s so cool I really miss it Oh my Now this is cool What they’re building new steam engines Chelsea I know I’ve just come make you look at a um train made of bricks and you fall in some nettles but you’re enjoying a great day out Just so you know just in case there’s any debate No I actually am So what have you learned here i’ve learned that the steam trains aren’t like a they’re basically making what we know a steam train is I thought it might be I thought it might be like a new version of a steam train but it’s a steam train It’s going to be powered by steam I thought it might like be have see-through sides and you be able to look into the mechanic I was expecting you know new and exciting but it’s the same as it’s always been What I’ve learned is that steam trains stopped being built in the 60s and here at Darlington Carriage Works they’ve built two new ones They had the A1 Is that right that’s that’s built and finished Great And now they’re building this this one the P2 Yeah Uh which is going to be a luxury glorious steam train So you can donate money and help the steam train industry which is on its knees No no no They are the last people who need bloody money Have you seen Not these guys Not these guys Have you seen how much it is to go on one of the Pullman trains yeah I’m not suggesting we donate money to the Orin Express That’s what I’m saying I’m saying help build one I I They need to go Guys we know you’re treasuring four grand a night Give us some more money Give us some more money Give us your money Golf One for your older viewers Have you ever been on the British Pullman no I’ve been on Not the only express like the one that runs in the UK Is it Waterloo yeah it goes it goes Well I went on it from Victoria I think it does different routes around actually You’re right I always get water in Victoria mixed up Yeah a little rhyme or something to be able to remember it But I found um what happened was and it was it’s a lot more expensive than it was I think I might have paid at the time a lot of money I think it was about £250 a ticket And that’s cheap for the Pulma Yeah But it’s a lot worse for India isn’t it yeah But the reason being was that I hadn’t got my wife a birthday present and it was like the day before and I knew something I could buy online Clever and I panicked But it was brilliant It was a steam steam train all around Kent and you’re having there having a meal at your table and just having glorious We had lovely time There’s a couple on the table next to us Did not speak to each other once It felt like a last attempt to salvage the relationship train ride Maybe they’re doing like a silent wellness retreat Maybe they did speak to us once they said point Can you take a photo of us like why do you want to remember this day you’re not spoken Yeah this this is very me This is very us isn’t it this is very me Can I have my 40th birthday here [Music] looks like some help sir That’s it I look like a pretty lady You’re a pretty lady about to go on your first ever locomotive [Music] My face is supremely too big to be in this hole Quick review of the museum Educational uh adventurous and super great Double thumbs up because I feel bad cuz you’ve all that’s happened so far is you’ve seen some bricks and been stung by singing nettles Although this has been good It has been good I’ve got your present So sorry Well love presents Hopetown bear Shut up How cool is he that is so cute Very good value this museum as well Free to get in And that was I won’t say for I’ll put it I’ll put the graphics I won’t spoil the price That’s what you do Get your presents But pretty good value museum shop Generally that’s one of the best museums I’ve been to in years So good And do you know what I’m going to call the bear ben Adams after the lead singer of A1 Incredible knowledge Uh taxi driver Have you had a Palmo before Is it good yeah I like Okay good Have you never had them never I’ve had one before Have you i’ve had one at Middlesbrough but I’ve never had one in Darlington All right But I’ve heard Manyros does good palos Yeah they’re brilliant Mangro Oh brilliant Okay good I’m excited now This is lovely around here isn’t it it’s so nice And we’re about to go into Mangaros but do you not think there’s a lawsuit waiting to happen with that logo it does look a bit Nandozy It looks so Nandoy I think I might have been to the Mangaros in Middlesbrough Really there’s more than one It was amazing Wow Let’s kind of look Let’s get some Let’s get some vanro [Music] Can I have the original the OG chicken palmo please do you know what a palo is well I think what I know of it is a chicken parmesan right Which to me is like an American dish I’ve done some digging The palmo So forget chicken parmmesan That’s something different The palmo or otherwise known as the teaside parmesan is a dish originating in Middlesbrough and very popular here and is a breaded cutlet of chicken or pork topped with white bashimal sauce and cheese usually cheddar Now the difference between that and chicken parmesan is that’s made with tomato sauce and mozzarella That’s the difference cuz we’re using proper proper English ingredients to make them here It’s very rare to learn something So you’ve done well I’ve learned and then Adams are honestly on an educational journey today Is this a joke this is a half How big is that half a heart attack So good That’s a amazing Oh my god Going to review your first taste of Palmo What’s not to like that’s absolutely divine 10 out of 10 You’ve gone for a spicy one Little spicy boy That’s what it Oh Incredible Love it Oh my god that was amazing I think I’ve actually become lactose intolerant I feel that the world’s not the same anymore Like like it was amazing I loved it But I feel like a lot of the the joy is gone from life We’ll only get that joy again when we have another Palmer I just feel it was great By the way it’s good I just feel maybe it would help if I did a little sick somewhere But it was so good I’d thoroughly recommend Darlington’s amazing We love it We’re nearing the end of our time in Darlington I feel we’ve we got a bit too heavy on trains we’re honest That’s I accept full responsibility for that Yeah But we did spend most of our time looking at various different trains Yes we did It’s what people would expect on this channel Yeah However I feel we need something to sort of push the Palmo down further inside us Yes And I think maybe that’s beer So let’s find the first pub we can Cheese plus bit sounds like the perfect combo Do you think this is helping the palo or hindering the palo it depends if if you mean currently now or its exit I just did a little puro I think it will definitely help it get out of my system The palmo is great by the way We shouldn’t we should stress This is no hate to the palo The palo’s magnificent but we I probably needed 2 hours to eat it We’re nearing the end of our time here In fact we’re at the end of our time because we’re on our way to the station Yeah Very sad I don’t feel we’ve had long enough to be honest I think we tried to cram it into one day and we’ve not had enough time We spent too long looking at trains Yeah we only scratched the surface But I think Darlington looks great I would give it a big double thumbs up I’m going to say I’m going to go so far as to say it is the best place I’ve been to on this series I think huge breaking you Put a little banner across Breaking news And a lot of that’s trains and I don’t mind saying that but a lot of it’s not trains a lot of it’s barbos So thank you very much for watching Um cheap holiday expert is now travel expert Holiday expert What are you holiday holiday expert It’s a new name I forget It’s just a new name Nothing else has changed Same stuff So follow her and all that sort of stuff And back with another video soon once I’ve sked up the palmo Me too

Glad you enjoyed your visit! There is a taxi app and it's £6 to go anywhere in Darlington, and this includes the surrounding villages. It's much faster and cheaper than Uber as many of the Uber drivers are coming from Newcastle or somewhere far. As someone else mentioned, Darlington has changed a lot over the past few years. Yes, the town centre is underwhelming, but there's a direct train to London and there are a lot of nice new houses on the outskirts which are attracting a lot of people to the town. It's easy commuting to Durham City, Catterick Garrison (largest millitary barracks) and even Newcastle. We also have an airport and if you fancy a road trip, you can be in the Yorkshire Dales NP, North York Moors NP or North Pennies AONB within 45 minutes. It's really a nice place to live and people are very friendly and approachable.
Darlington is the home of the railways. Funded by the Quaker family of Pease.
Stevenson needed patronage, so
He walked all the way from his home too Darlington carrying his
shoes and then right before meeting (think it was Edward)
Please, put them on.
Must have worked,
The Stockton to Darlington was the first line.
People are very polite in Darlington.
I miss BINNS
Lol
Welsh girl officially replaced, wolf never goes hungry.
I don't live too far from Darlo but never actually been there. Will have to explore sometime!
Should have went to South Park it’s a 10 minute walk from town and it’s beautiful
Well I sorry to say I lived in darlington went to school in darlington had my teenage years in Darlington and I absolutely hate the place
I don't remember David Quick but I was at Middleton St George Primary School when the train was built and that poem would have been written.
It's not called dirty darlo for nothing
I moved up from Liverpool in 2013 and haven't looked back. A fantastic no hassle town.
The Train was invented in County Durham and the Darlington to Stockton line was the first train track that the first train travelled on. The actual Borth of the railways. The brick train is a bat sanctuary.
Did you go to Haus der Bratwurste? It's in darlington market, best beer I've ever had. perfectly pulled pints
Darlington.
Great place to live!
Hopetown, railway museum on this video, really is very good!!!!

Ah thanks guys. For showing us in such a nice light. Ita not bad
Fantastic video! Im born and raised in Darlington… moved to Middlesbrough for a year and had to come back. I love this place. Not too crowded (yet) but big enough to have most of what you need. Oh and by the way… that big clock overlooking our town is the sister bell to Big Ben! Donated to the town by Joseph Pease in 1864
I grew up in Darlo, only live down the road. Don't think I've seen someone make it look so nice. 😀
Gotta come to Richmond it’s very close to Darlington/darlo🙏
Proper scum shit hole is Darlington
My hometown this
its crazy to see your own home town on youtube
If you want a decent parmo its always best from a takaway usually in Boro, restaurant parmos aint that good
What a town
I went to school with David Quick!!
I live in Darlington, and thanks for the thumbs up and the kind words. Not a lot of people have said such nice things.
Hmm… This maybe explains my love of trains and parmos being from Darlo 😃
big up dirty darlo come to bish next mate
The post-parmo clarity is so real
We are overly proud of being the "home of the train" here in darlo.
I was posher than I thought it would be & had some nice old buildings
Local of 18 years and yeah it’s interesting to say the least. We have too many taxis the rest of the week and only Friday and Saturday nights there aren’t enough. Yeah I’d say leave. But the brick train is the most iconic landmark of this area built by David Mach in like 96’. It’s not the most interesting but it’s a nice middle place to live. Also that Morrisons car park is pretty interesting, there’s a large amount of youth there in the nightlife.
What the fuck is robbie knox doing in darlo then 😂 genuinly so weird seeing you cut about st cuthberts the amount of drunk walks ive done through that graveyard with my mates with a parmo in hand
I've lived in Darlington all my life, it's a lovely part of the northeast, glad you enjoyed your time. Also, yes, the brick train is a massive waste of time 😂
