Hey y’all, I recently picked up this 90s Trek 7000 aluminum frame for $60 and looking to build it up as a commuter bike. I’m thinking about doing a 1×10 or 1×9 drive train.
Any advice on where to start? I want to use mostly second-hand components for cost reasons. should I start trying to find used parts at local swaps or market place and assemble as I go? Are there any huge issues I could run into with trying to find part compatibility, etc?
Thanks!

the only things that really need to match are shifters and derailleurs. And for brakes ofc if they’re cable/hydraulic, for the rest the general 1xY drivetrain. Crank etc. can basically be whatever als long as they support 1x.
Make sure your bank account is prepared!!
Wheels. 26″ not too wide. Prob 135mm spacing but make sure because you can’t bend this frame to fit. You will need a rear with a 8sp freehub as opposed to a freewheel. I suggest you go 9spd and not 10 because there is a considerable price jump going from 9 to 10 speed. And 9 is plenty if you’re just commuting and farting around town.
Id check the frame all over for cracks first : Aluminum can and will fatigue over time and this seems like a VERY old frame ( Modern frames have a derailleur hanger separate from the frame )
Check out Microshift for 1×8 shifter, rear derailleur, 8 speed cassette, compatible chain ring and chain. Contact Microshift directly
Shimano XT brakes components.
No advice, just want to say I appreciate your bike stand! Best of luck!
I’d hit up a bike co-op for a one stop shop that will keep me under budget. If all you have is a frame, you have a very long list of parts to go. Best of luck.
