    Yeah, that’s what happens when you shift into the spokes. Can happen from a bent derailleur, bent hanger or low limit screw too far out. The stuff of nightmares. Sorry for your loss.

  2. I work in a bike shop, so I see this all the time. But counter point I ride all the time on several bikes and I’ve never personally happened to me. I’ve had numerous flats and once I even cracked the hub flanges of a rear wheel but I’ve never thrown a derailleur into the wheel.

  3. Been there. Not fun. Hopefully the derailleur hanger has sacrificed itself (as it is designed to do) and your frame is ok.

  4. Mine almost did this but we caught it in time.

    Has your bike tipped over on the derailleur side recently? Because that’s how it happened on mine. I think the only difference is, we noticed after the fall that something didn’t look quite right, and we were right next to a bike shop, so they spotted it before it became a problem.
