Hi all, I have just changed the cassette on my wahoo kickr from a 10-30 to a 10-36. I have a new bike arriving that is a 1x and the extra gearing on Zwift is handy compared to the road.
However I am having the issue in the video. The rear derailleur is capable of have a 36t cassette and chain length seems ok. At least in the middle of the cassette at this stage.
Without a bike on I can freely spin the cassette backwards however I feel the tension that is hanging it up is coming from the free hub/cassette?
I’m very confused. Any advice would be great.
And no I’m not a bike mechanic so go easy on me please. 🙏

No free spinning backwards

Why do you need to pedal backwards on a trainer? It’s not really designed for that

  2. It’s a beautiful cassette on a beautiful machine. I’m sorry you are having a frustrating time with it. I would check my derailer to make sure your not cross chaining and putting pressure against an adjacent cog. Double check chain comparability for the hardware.once you are comfortable with that If you are still getting negative input from your machine during forward rotation of the pedals and binding on the back pedal I would contact the manufacturer first thing. Perhaps something slipped by QC. If you need to exchange it, that would provide the opportunity the check the fit of your assembly.

  3. Chain and cassette are both SRAM E1 so not a compatibility issue there. I guess it’s possible there is a manufacturing defect. I am back on the 10-30 now as I needed to get my workout done before work but will install again after work to see if this chain rubbing between cogs is an issue. Thanks

Bikes aren’t designed to be pedalled backwards. On a correctly installed setup, when it catches like this it’s usually linked to the shifting adjustment, but the issue is you index a bike so you can pedal forwards, not backwards. I’d follow the instructions for micro adjusting your shifting and see if this fixes it, but it’s not a guaranteed solution because it’s not really a problem.
Given how expensive these cassettes are, I would not be wearing it out on an indoor setup, but each to their own.

  5. Brother, why would spend money on a new cassette for zwift when there is virtual shifting these days?

Does this occur when you’re in the big chain ring?

It could be a chain tension/length issue.

I had the exact same problem once. Turned out that some of the grease I put on the thru axle somehow managed to get in the free hub. You have to disassemble the free hub and see if anything is in there. Clean it and put some light oil in. The normal grease is to “sticky’ and will cause this problem.

Edit: the amount of bad advice you get here really is disappointing. It’s certainly NOT the chain or anything like this. It’s 100% a free hub problem
