Thought these bolts would give a nice accent colour to a bike i was building but snapped the bolt off with very little torque… I should have known better but alas i’m a dumb. Luckily i was able to extract the snapped off threading.
Aluminum bolts of indeterminate quality? Yikes, good luck with the extraction.

Aluminum crank bolts, now there’s something I never thought of doing

Yeah, no, my rule is to not buy anything off temu that is a critical or safety component just to save a few bucks.
Buuuut, I did have a co-worker buy/build a road bike using AliExpress components and I believe he still rides it to this day.
I guess my.measage is….YMMV 🤣

Not the place for aluminium dude..

The only way to obtain a coloured bolt is by anodising. The material used for anodising is aluminium.
An aluminium bolt, any aluminium bolt, is a terrible idea. But even more so when requiring tens of Nm of torque.

No shit. Don’t buy anything off temu.

Or just read the reviews next time. There are plenty of better quality components on there.

Theres a simple trick for these, use a steel bolt to torque to spec. Then swap for aluminium, titanium or whatever.
If I remember correctly this was also how youre supposed to do it according to some tune manual or KCNC manual.
Use the steel to crank, then swap to save the weight.

Alu probably too weak for that bolt, but could you not use the original Shimano bolt and then get a fancy looking anodized threaded cap?

It has nothing to do with Temu. Presumably the listing specified that they were aluminum. You can buy those on Amazon too. But you’re supposed to know that aluminum crank bolts aren’t going to be strong enough.

You’re lucky since it would have failed on the road anyway. Even Ti bolts for square taper cranks are only meant to be installed after torqueing to spec with a steel bolt first. Alloy is just asking for trouble here.

The same brand Muqzi is selling V-brakes for old mountain bikes with similar lousy alloy bolts that snap even in low torque. And the brakes were not even cheap in comparison.

When Compass (nee Rene Herse) first introduced their own crank bolt, I remember talking to Jan Heine about sourcing their bolts and the relative failure rate of crank bolts generally. Apparently a generic hardened steel crank bolt from TH Industries (who makes most of this shit in Taiwan) has a failure rate of one in a billion (which he pretended was too high for his preferences).

Nobody buying on Temu and getting the short end is deserving any sympathy. Same goes for Shein and all the rest of the “hey let’s rip off cheapskate moron westerners”-shops.
