I’ve broken a skewer by trying to close it too tight, but nothing like that. Tell us what happened.

That is a solid freewheel axle so they are expected to break after a while due to their design having the wheel bearings being off center. You can sorta avoid this by usung hollow freewheel axle with a quick releaee skewer. The skewer squeezes the axle together so when it does break in the hub the quick release holds it all together in one piece and you won’t even notice until you remvoe the wheel then it falls apart.

I broke one. Noticed it getting really hard to ride uphill. When I stopped and looked everything looked fine. When I was standing and pedaling really hard though the wheel shifted and was rubbing hard against the frame. Got off the hills and made it through the day.
