I had a janky ass grip shifter (you can see where I cut the grip to fit it). I found a shimano deerhead friction shifter in awesome condition for $5 to replace it, and it's honestly so much better.

100% agree – who thought that indexing a front triple was ever a good idea? I would even prefer friction shifting for a front double. Is there such a thing as a friction brifter?
I have been loving my bar-end friction front/indexed rear setup. Never thought I would appreciate it, but not having to tune the hell out of a front chainring makes life so much nicer!
Gevanalle shifter might give you the option for friction shifting in a brighter-lime configuration
Post again when you switch the rear to friction too!
Friction is the way.
Triples is best.
