The Clifton Suspension Bridge is a suspension bridge spanning the Avon Gorge and the River Avon, linking Clifton in Bristol to Leigh Woods in North Somerset .Since opening in 1864, it has been a toll bridge, the income from which provides funds for its maintenance. The bridge is built to a design by William Henry Barlow and John Hawkshaw,[2] based on an earlier design by Isambard Kingdom Brunel. It is a Grade I listed building and forms part of the B3129 road.
A Grade I listed structure, Clifton Suspension Bridge is deemed worthy of the highest quality conservation and record keeping in order to preserve one of the oldest surviving iron suspension bridges in the world.
There is a £1 toll for motor vehicles and is free of charge to pedestrians and cyclists – no booking required.
There is no charge for pedestrians, cyclists or horse riders crossing the bridge. Just as the bridge spans Avon Gorge, joining Bristol and North Somerset, the history of Clifton Suspension Bridge spans three centuries.
