I’m only a year into the hobby and still learning, so any patience and advice on the geometry is much appreciated.

I currently have a used, size Small Co-op FS DRT 3.1 bike, with a 26 x 3.0” and 26 x 2.8” wheel set, with a Surly Dirt wizard 3” on the front and a Minion DHF 2.8” in the back.

Can anyone tell me if this for-sale, mullet 29 x 27.5 wheelset would work with my Small frame geometry? Or can you tell me how to determine if this would even work for me? If smaller bikes come with 26” wheelsets, is there a way to tell if they would work well with larger wheels?

TIA for any pointers

  1. I don’t know for sure – but 26 to 29 is a big leap. It probably wouldn’t fit your fork. The 27.5 may not even fit within your rear triangle.

  2. So you want to swap out an existing 26in spec frame and fork bike with a 29 x 27.5 wheelset?

    If so, not a chance.

The rear might fit a 27.5 with a skinny tyre but it’s highly unlikely you’ll squeeze a 29 under that fork.

Aside from the cost, you’ll seriously change the geo and ride characteristics of the bike.

You might get a 27.5 in the front fork. Which will affect the geo, turning rake etc.

Since it fits 26×3.0 tires, the 27.5″ rear wheel should fit fine with 2.4ish tires. The fork is (surely?) a 27.5″ fork and won’t fit a 29″ wheel, unfortunately.

That wheelset also has an XD driver, so you would need to either swap that for a HG freehub or get a new SRAM cassette.

  4. It might but you’d probably need to run a really skinny tyre on the rear which would end up giving you the same diameter as a fat 26 tyre. A new 29er fork would roast your bottom bracket, slacken your head and seat angles and shorten your reach. Which would mess up the geometry.

So basically it wouldn’t be worth the effort.
