Funicular da Graça

The city of Lisbon, in Portugal, just opened
the new Graça Funicular. This rather nondescript building is the entrance. When I visited, admission was free, but it
will soon become part of the public transit network, and accessible with a public transit
pass. Unlike a typical funicular that has two cars
which pass at the midpoint, this funicular only has one car that holds
14 passengers at a time. The whole trip takes less than 5 minutes. From the top you can get some great views
of the city. Lisbon is a very hilly city, so it has built
several funiculars and even elevators
to make the city more accessible. But if you don’t want to pay for the funicular,
Or just need a bit of exercise, You can always take the stairs, instead.

  1. Oh, nice. Had no idea. On the New Year, I went walking from the Terreiro do Paço to home. Instead of taking the Funicular da Graça, i had to climb up the Ladeira da Graça (not the stairs – a hellish ramp with almost 45 degrees of inclination at some points).

I might try the Funicular next time…

  2. i didn't used the funicular when i went at Lisbon, Just used the stairs and saw it mooving around. It wasn't hard to get up the hill, but a Funicular can be sometimes helpful

  3. Is it really funicular?

Per Wikipedia: "The system is characterized by two counterbalanced carriages (also called cars or trains) permanently attached to opposite ends of a haulage cable, which is looped over a pulley at the upper end of the track.[2][3] The result of such a configuration is that the two carriages move synchronously: as one ascends, the other descends at an equal speed. **This feature distinguishes funiculars from inclined elevators, which have a single car that is hauled uphill.**"

    So, "inclined elevator"

  4. I've not been to Lisbon, so I might be wrong, but this doesn't seem worth it for the majority of people. It IS however, amazing for the elderly or others with physical impedements, but I feel like they should be able to use it for free.

  5. I live in PA and we have the steepest incline plane in the world…. 2 cars cross in the middle and they're big enough to hold 3 or 4 cars each but when it was active it would only carry 1 at a time, but it's still awesome. ❤

  6. "If you don't want to pay for the funicular or want a bit of exercise…" Or or or you're like me and CAN'T pay to use the funicular because all my money went to paying for it through taxes and now I can't even afford to use it.
