Are you talking about the black squiggles? Pretty sure that’s just the paint job.

They’re there on purpose. It’s paint.

Well I feel dumb. I thought this was some sort of fungus or something eating away at the paint in a unique pattern.
Thanks everyone!

Is this Trek? I’ve had old trek frame with same painting. I think it was trek 8000. Looks pretty cool.

I’ve got the same bike. It’s just a paint splatter effect.

Do you mean the black? That’s just a radical splatter paint job. My 91 trek has that and I love it.

it’s a 90’s splatter paint style. Perfectly normal to see that on several bikes from various brands during that period

It could be cobweb splatter spray paint from spray.bike or something similar?

I believe it’s paint design. Where they meet the lettering they just disappeared, if it was cracking paint to that degree you would see chips and pieces missing.

Is that a Trek 930? There’s a description of the paint job on this website that describes it as “electric blue with black splash and white decals” for the 1992 model year.
Loads of bike manufacturers in the 90s did this but gt and Trek where the best at it ,blue and black web as got to one of the best looking paint jobs apart from the red of course as that just made you faster cos it was red 🍒
