I'm in a right state. I am not a bike person. I've taken delivery of my son's second hand bike and it was necessarily in a few pieces. The back wheel was off and the chain in a right tangle. I removed the derailleur to try and fix the chain routing. But now the derailleur looks like this and there's no chain tension. I cannot work it out despite fiddling for ages. What is obvious to you is not to me so please share your wisdom! It is a Squish 26, if that matters. Thanks so much!

See the little silver arm that connects the derailiure to the bike, there is a notch on the inside of it that should catch the derailiure hanger, this will make it sit at the correct angle.
I’d take the chain off the front ring so you have some slack, then grab a 5 mm Allen and loosen the bolt on the hanger. You may/may not need to take it fully out. Twist the derailiure till the notch is resting on top of the hanger and tighten
There should be a tab on the bottom of red part, the black part connected to the derailleur should go behind/above it.
I don’t really see well but pay attention to the tab in-between the 2 wheels in the derailleur, the chain shouldn’t touch it
I might be wrong, but perhaps the cage (the moving part with the 2 pulley wheels) might be rotated above its usual limit. Perhaps due to a crash or someone tinkered with it. Can you show a picture of the derailleur without the chain in it?
