the 88th running of the Tour of Switzerland no time trial to start us off this time absolutely not racing straight out of the box and some great names had made the trip to be here so what type of rider would win today the GC men would they stay ki for the high ground still to come the sprinters would it be too hard with some really testing climbs at the top and tail of the day would the Baraders have their fun we’re about to find out we left Kushnack in beautiful sunshine a series of loops the opening climbs to be repeated late on ultimately bringing us back home 2,87 m of altitude gain this was no easy task time then to get to the racing and just look at the course broken chainsaw you might say virtually no flat ground and that suited Julian Alfilly just fine and dandy 66 to1 outsider at the beginning of the day for the stage and he was lively just like the days of old for the double world champion in the good company of Felix Anhart he was part of a big breakaway of 29 riders that were putting the hurt down turbo Turbo the Australian champion was there luke Dervich of course working for Jacob and ultimately Ben O’ Conor working the grounds well as a few took a tumble on the day young Christian was one of them and Quinn Simmons was another it was brutal 60% chance of rain they said it was absolutely 100% at the end and that was what the chase had to give if they were going to catch the break 29 strong riders with climb still to come well it was the loop that they’ done in the first part of the day so they knew knew exactly what was coming some sterling work by Ben Swift he tried to stay with it but just couldn’t quite keep up with the mountains men and they indeed started to show their hand julian Philipe started the move dragging Roman Gregoire up there but the man came along for the ride and Kevin Vanon as well this four they held a margin before of course over the top of the final climb Roman Gregoire said see you I’m out of here could he be caught though that was the question a modest 7 11second advantage was held all the way to the line in fact expanded as those behind him played Count Mouse gregoire taking this race by the scruff of the neck just 22 years of age took the day and indeed took the lead of the race of course balan second home ahead of Lamount with Alfle incredible fourth place ben Connor did get a decent finish who went for the high ground to impose himself properly but some big names found themselves with a big wakeup call because of what Roman Gregoire did today absolutely outstanding greg taking it by a margin of 20 seconds plus his bonus seconds to be added on as well ben Oconor leading home at the chase lenny Kemler in the frame as well and he does wear that gold beautifully doesn’t he roman Gregoire big smiles from the youngster and a big prospect for this race came here for stage wins finds himself leading by 24 seconds something to defend as the run to Schvatee tomorrow looks well his kind of thing if he could do it on day one he can do it again on day two he swed such fortitude that this will hold no fear different kind of day I guess you might say with rolling terrain before the high ground comes late on an uphill finish will hold no fear for the young man by the time we reach the Black Sea the man in gold may well just shine again the tour of Switzerland it’s been an amazing opener and it’s going to be just as good on stage two
