When Hafiz’s “Divan” first entered the German language in Hammer-Purgstall’s translation, Johann Wolfgang von Goethe was among its most devoted readers. The work is housed in the Duchess Anna Amalia Library in Weimar. Inspired by and in dialogue with this richly annotated edition, Goethe wrote his cycle of poems, “West-Eastern Divan” (1819), beginning in 1814.
Goethe about Hafiz:
And may the whole world sink,
Hafiz, with you, with you alone
, I will compete! Pleasure and pain
shall be common to us, the twins!
To love and drink like you,
that shall be my pride, my life. #goethe #hafiz #poetry #persianpoetry #germanpoetry #influence
und mag die ganze Welt versinken haf es mit dir mit dir allein will ich wetteifern Lust und Pein sei uns den Zwillingen gemein wie du zu lieben und zu trinken soll mein Stolz mein Leben sein
