Hello all, I am looking to purchase my first “real” mountain bike as I used to ride a Walmart bike. After some research, I’ve landed on this. Compared to other bikes in my price range (Under $900) such as the Trek Marlin 5 Gen 3, it seems like this Kona has better specs. What are your guys’ thoughts?

Absolutely Kona is a great brand. For the same price I would pick the Kona Mahuna over the Marlin 5 Gen 3. The designs are comparable since Trek has now modernised the Marlin geometry (kona was ahead of them on this) but the spec of the Kona is better. Im sure you noticed the better drivetrain but it also has an air fork, tapered headtube, and tubeless ready rims
Kona has been going through some difficulties and another transition in ownership. Their bikes do tend to be a little better value but they are not the only option for a better value. And it’s not the most stable option from a warranty standpoint right now. I would consider buying a Kona if it’s a good enough sale price, and through a local dealer that will stand by it, and support you as best as possible if Kona doesn’t come through. I don’t think I would buy direct to consumer.
I’m not a fan of those Judy silvers. Get a bike with a better fork.
Concur that Kona is a first rate manufacturer. I’ve had multiple Kona’s and still ride a Kona Big Unit singlespeed and a Libre gravel bike.
