when we travel hiking biking and Backcountry skiing are activities that we love to enjoy and they are a lot more enjoyable if you know where you are where you’re going and how to get home today I want to share with you an adventure mapping app which we’ve been using for some time and if you already subscribe to the OS Maps app this one might change your mind so keep watching in the UK ordinance survey are definitely the go-to place for topographic mapping and in the past we’ve subscribed to the OS Maps app to get access to them but what we didn’t realize is that there are other apps that also provide access to OS Maps the footpath app and subscription has some features that make it even better for us than os’s own app so let’s take a look at the top reasons why we think that first let’s take a look at the subscription price the subscription for the OS Maps app whilst they do occasionally have discounts sales is normally $34.99 for the year or £6.99 per month for the foot path app the annual subscription is £ 2149 or £349 a month and with an additional option of £199 if you just want it for one route so that’s £ 1350 a year cheaper than going direct to OS to get access to the same Maps but there’s more when we look at what you get with the subscription not only do you get access to and the ability to download OS Maps but there’s also a plethora of other Maps covering most of the world there’s footpath and satellite topo maps and National topo maps similar to OS maps for many European countries and the US here we’re using the web browser version to view on our laptop and you can see the level of detail in a couple of our favorite locations in Spain and France which if you travel for Adventures further a field than the UK it’s great and don’t get with the OS Maps app once you’ve downloaded them for offline use you can continue to access the maps even without to data signal as you can see here where we’ve put the phone into flight mode with both the OS map and the simplified navigation app which we’ll talk about more in a minute before we look at some more of footpaths killer features the last thing we want while out on the trail is to be worrying about how safe our van is while parked up we’ve been a long time using user and recommend the Carlock range of GPS trackers that bring all those features plus they have recently added their portable waterproof vibration sensors which pair with their trackers to protect other items nearby as well as the vehicle here’s some examples of how we use them our generator although usually locked to the van has a sensor on it in case anyone tampers with it on our bikes we can pop a sensor under the seat and as they’re waterproof it’s fully protected Ed and if anyone messes with the bikes will be notified popping a sensor inside our portable diesel heater gives us early warning should anyone try to steal it and to protect the rear Garage on our van we have a sensor just inside the back door each tag can be individually named and if triggered you get a notification to let you know now let’s get back to the footpath app with thousands of walking biking and other activity routes available from various sources on the internet being able to get those roots into the footpath app needs to be easy well it is once you’ve downloaded the GPX file to your phone you simply tap import GPX file select the file and the rout appears in your app if you prefer to plan your own routes well that couldn’t be simpler too unlike other apps where you need to plot multiple way points to build up your route with the foot path app Snap to root function you have the option to tap your start points and your end location and the app will automatically provide a route for you just like a car satnav but using trails and paths you can then extend or modify this route as you [Music] want if you want to be more specific on your route you can simply trace the roof path along a route and the app will refine it exactly to the mark [Music] Trail if you do want to plan a route off Trail you can easily switch off the snap to Trail function once your route is defined you can switch map types or views to visualize the [Music] rout now we come to another satnav type feature which we’ve not seen in other activity mapping apps turn BYT turn navigation this is a great way to save battery on your device as you don’t need to keep waking it up and looking at your phone to check the map to make sure you’re on route as just like a satnav the phone will prompt you for any directions or Trail changes turn right onto the trail keep right across the trail onto the trail it will also tell you if you start to go off the plan track you are off rout the route is 150 ft behind you and finally if you are an Apple Watch owner unlike the OS Maps app that only shows your distance and time and allows you to start or stop your trip the footpath app shows you these and turn by turn directions compass and even the map to save having to get your phone out of your pocket at all you can even download the routs and maps to your watch so you don’t even need the phone Switched Off on or even with you you’re on fruit the route is 150 ft ahead to your right so in summary for less money than the OS Maps app you get access and the ability to download the same OS maps maps for other countries better route planning functionality turn BYT navigation and much better Apple Watch app so you can see why we changed and you may want to as well thanks for watching our video and as always if you have any questions or feedback please pop them in the comments below find the video useful please like share and consider subscribing

Excellent video on this app ,thank you .
My outdoor active at about £8 more gives turn by turn and a whole heap of tracks n trails. So does this give 1-25k, 1-50k or just a topo? and can you download directly to a Garmin sat nav as mobile phone use has poor battery limitations and can be difficult to use either in rain poor visibility or wearing gloves in winter.
As a long time user of digital mapping they can be great but have their downsides as well. My best combination is a paper map and compass together with a sat nav that takes AA batteries.
BTW What three words can be useless too, thanks for your video though
I have an Elite subscription to this app which unlocked all fratures. However i do have one gripe with it…There is no option in the list of map styles to have 3D Satellite view for me to see my planned route? I notice in your review you have the 3D Satellite option but mine just has normal Satellite view on my Elite subscription. Is there something i need to enable? Thanks
Thanks for the video! Do you know whether the Footpath app allows people in the same family to share subscriptions as my wife and I do with the OS App (using one login)?
Have emailed Footpath before I make a purchase, but they have not replied back after 3 days, so I won't be purchasing.
New to your channel, thank you very much awesome review 🎉
Does the OS map show on the watch or only the apple one?
Does this app work on Garmin
Have you compared the OS topographic maps in both apps. Is the Footpath mapping app using up to date os maps? I've been using Backcountry Navigator Pro for over a decade but they no longer update the os maps so looking for a new map app.
