Hemel Hempstead unveils Hertfordshire’s first ever Dutch-style roundabout — prioritising cyclists and pedestrians over cars. But is it a safer step towards greener travel, or just a confusing experiment in road design that cost £2 million?

it’s a roundabout revolution a multicolored dutch design where pedestrians and cyclists rule the road ahead of cars why did you decide to use a dutch roundabout because it’s safer to use you can see the traffic slowing down they’re giving way to pedestrians they’ll be giving way to the cyclists this is only the fourth dutch roundabout in the country the first appeared in cambridge in 2020 but aware of its confusion the council has released this video for road users when driving be prepared to give way to people walking and riding bikes here priority is given to pedestrians and cyclists with drivers forced to stop twice they should give way to you and this new inclusive road has come at a hefty price of more than2 million the main problem for this roundabout built for pedestrians and cyclists is that it’s in a business park so there aren’t many pedestrians or cyclists the only people we filmed on two wheels on the day of the launch were actually counselors testing out their own new road the roundabout is horrendous there’s no need for it it’s a waste of money we literally have no one who cycles here so it doesn’t make sense all this could have gone on something so much better and especially for the area and what we’ve done is just ridiculous we’re living in a dash of estate what cyclists are going to be here do you think many people are going to use it no no i don’t think nobody in here around this area there we don’t have cyclists around this area so i will be surprised if i’m going to see somebody hi pier how’s it going pleased to meet your rags you all right we went on the road with driving instructor piers lawrence is this in the highway code this roundabout no so what do you think of the roundabout there is not much footfall there and for the cost that it’s cost of 2.3 million i think local residents would prefer something like a hospital or infrastructure being built up before we build a roundabout at that price he’s used to the magic of new road layouts in 1973 they experimented with this spiral two-way traffic system at the plow roundabout why was it needed here we’re in an industrial estate and there aren’t many cyclists i mean there’s one cyclist over there but he works for the council i haven’t seen one actual cyclists or not that many pedestrians we’re building this before developments happen here so this is actually will increase usage as time goes on with both cyclists and pedestrians this roundabout’s taken a hard turn for greener transport but all it’s missing now is the cyclists and pedestrians it was built for

How can a few tins of paint cost 2 million quid, wasnt there a b&q on that estate😂😂
ONE OF THE NEW DEATH TRAPS
2 milioane for this?!😂 This is a joke 🤣🤣🤣! Council it's full with incompetent people! Hemel Hampstead have so many potholes 😢 what's going on with this country????? When you coming in Hemel, Phoenix Gateway Roundabout it's full with potholes ! 2 millions pods …. they washed some money 💰😅!
I wonder if this has something to do with the government incentive to encourage more active travel. Implementing infrastructure to change habits for short journeys by providing safer facilities for all highway users 🤔
What a waste of money
Great idea
Would it not have been cheaper to build a bridge that is ramped? It's not like cyclists are out trying to get fit or anything…
Yes yes. Super……Build roads with priority for walkers & bikes potty bastards
Been driving on that round about for 3 years every single day never seen a cyclist, someone had a good bite of that what a joke😂😂😂
Just got to be a Labour Council?
A lot cheaper, and safer to ban all cyclists from the roads. Bicycles are TOYS which most people grow out of at 14. Ban them. A total nuisance. 😂
Surprise, surprise. The Lib Dumb thinks it's a good idea. 2.3 million? Bargain!
What cyclists are going to be here she asks?! How about the the ones that work for here like you? Do people still not realise it's a legitimate form of transport? #CARBRAIN
Gotta start somewhere and having a good example is useful for designers and contractors
People on bikes may not feel safe on those roads, but with the introduction of a safer alternative, it is likely that more individuals will now commute by bike to the industrial park.
Another huge waste of money to satisfy the councils ideology ….
Agenda 2030 stuff
2 million pound for a roundabout? 1.5 million pound for the idea, £500,000 for the build.
Typical Daily Mail hate filled, anti cyclist, pro motorist bullshit.
Roundabout "for bikes": 95% road, 5% bike and footpath.
Our incompetent council have just installed a cycle lane on a main route by narrowing the road for cars and lorries but the cyclists don’t use it as it’s quicker for them to stay on the road which is now more dangerous as it’s narrower than it was and when you blow your horn at them as you squeeze by them you get various gestures and profanities hurled at you well done council another great use of my money!
British road "culture" need basic re-thinking. Stricter test driving skills, exams and hevty fines for speeding, and breaking road rules. Drivers DO NOT understand highway code and ignore it on daily basis. In Australia, and the EU it WORKS! In the UK nothing works.
Of course hes a Lib Dem that says a lot 🤣
typical council , PISSING TAXPAYERS CASH away on useless crap
Having lived and now drive in The Netherlands often. I can category say the British road designers have taken the name Dutch roundabout, but unfortunately never looked at designs of just how the Dutch implement them. Look them up on YouTube.
The road signs and rules in the Uk are not the same as in The Netherlands, neither is driver training.
Could we be looking at forward planning ?? I could certainly understand anyone in the UK overlooking the possibility ….
What a total waste of money. I live a mile away and it's safer to use the actual road than the green ring . Drivers don't know what to do.
And this is why some people should never be a councillor
There’s safe ways to cycle there, so why would anyone outside of super confident cyclists even be there? Hertfordshire is driving centric, without connected infrastructure why would sporadic infrastructure magically be used outside of super built up areas.
Er, aren't trucks (particularly artics) potentially forced to stop blocking both the cycle path and footway when entering or the roundabout when leaving?
