I’ve got a seat-post that I’m trying to replace, only the diameter of the old one (25.6mm) seems to be pretty hard to come by. I’ve found a 25.8mm seat-post and was wondering if the extra 0.2mm would make so much of a difference that it prevents the post from fitting into my bike’s frame

Not hard to find. Get the right one
You need the correct size seat post, full stop. 25.8 mm will not fit and will ruin your frame. You could theoretically ream the top of the seat tube and make it work, but that’s much harder and more expensive than just buying the correct seat post.
