I have been looking in the used market for my first bike, preferably a hybrid for going around town and the occasional gravel trail. My neighbor happened to have a bike stashed in her garage that I am allowed to do whatever I want with, and I'm wondering if I should work on rebuilding it. It looks like possibly a 90s Specialized Rockhopper. It has rim brakes and says Direct Drive CRMO Tube. The tires are flat, and clearly lots of work to do, but it seems like the right size for me and the tube is in good condition. Does it seem like I could get it to a functional state for less than $300? My whole goal was to not spend a ton of money on my first bike while I'm getting into the sport.

  1. Yes it’s very possible to get it working well for under $300. Now will you want to stop afterwards is another story. You might want racks or lights or new wheels /tires, a 1×8/9 speed drivetrain.

I’d replace the tires/tubes and maybe cables/housing depending on condition and ride it like that. Most maintenance that will need is likely lubrication
