Cycling Through the Kühtai Saddle – Quiet Roads and Big Mountains

Riding my bike over the Kühtai Pass was one of those days that just sticks with you. The climb is tough — long, steady, and high — but the silence and scenery make it something special. At over 2,000 meters, it’s one of Austria’s highest paved passes, yet it feels remote and peaceful.

The road winds through forests, past alpine lakes, and opens up to incredible views near the top. No traffic, no noise — just me, the mountain, and the sound of my breathing. It’s the kind of ride that reminds you why you love cycling.

If you’re into big climbs, quiet roads, and dramatic alpine landscapes, Kühtai is more than worth the effort.

Cheers Ingo

[Music] hi everybody Ingo here How you doing another day another video This time directly from T-roll Austria I’m in the Ustal Valley All the cows are out having their breakfast Morgan Morgan Let me stop for a sec I explain you what’s ahead of us today This is the beginning of the Ustal famous valley here in Austria little village over there And that’s where we’re going to head up today It’s the famous Cout Thai Pass or Cout Thai Saddle You’re cycling up to over 2,000 m above sea level It’s quite a climb 17.5 kilometers and the elevation gain is a whopping 1,220 m This climb connects the Utal Valley with the Seline Valley on the other side close to Insbrook Folks join me on this epic ride and it will be spectacular Dream weather as well Up to 28° today beginning of June Sun is fighting So are we Let’s do this Mountain biking is huge here but they’re all on the ebikes See the glacial water obviously all melting high up the grounds Yeah Ustal is very popular winter time and summertime A lot of tourists come here Beautiful little Austrian villages surrounded by big mountains Look at this gorgeous hotel So the climb starts pretty soon now here in Here we go Obviously it’s quite a long climb 17 and 12 kilome So important is pace yourself Average gradient is around 7% But uh there are some stretches with up to 16% Now the beginning is straight 10% So don’t forget to warm up a little bit Yeah I did a couple more videos of this valley Further in the famous Timl and uh to the right you go up to the Stala Glacia which is one of the toughest climbs you probably can do in Austria Not far away in the valley You see the big peaks in there Still quite a lot of snow up there So if you want to see those videos just go back in time and you’ll find them somewhere on the channel Yeah If you ride your bike here either you are a mountain goat like these guys or you have an ebike the guys from Denmark H yeah another guide lady just looked at me You must be mad going up here with a normal bike Anyway good glimpse of Earth you see now 2 km 200 m elevation gain So all these mountains nearby they’re all close to 3,000 m 2,800 But we’re going to see many more further up Sweating big time It’s warm [Music] here After Mulo you see 12% bit steeper And this stretch up to the pass is called the nether valley Trucks and lorries are not allowed here So you might see on the weekend some motorbikes but uh generally not much traffic And this water ends up in the river in then the Danube and eventually into the Black Sea Almost halfway up Yeah there are a couple of ramps in between 10 12% flat parts as well And now switchbacks [Music] starting All right ladies and gentlemen And so after these six switchbacks it’s actually a bit downhill even and uh flattish We’re going through a little place called Oxen Garden So you’re losing a bit of your precious elevation gain It’s actually a ski resort here Kai 7 and 1/2 ks to go So 10 already done Yeah Just for your information this is actually the entrance or when you come from uh the other side from him Very steep very challenging tougher than this one Yeah maybe you heard about sport called Rat Marathon It starts in Seldon and it’s quite a challenging one 220 kilometers with an elevation gain over 5,000 mters over four major passes So this one is the first one Coutai Next one is Brena Pass followed by Yaoen pass and last but not least the hardest right at the end Tim So it always happens end of August So but if you want to participate you need to be quite early cuz there are only limited amount of entries I think 4,000 something like that But you can do this loop without being without paying an entry fee So no problem You can come here anytime and just do the ride Look at that river next to the road Absolutely stunning I bet there are some trouts in there So if you want to come uh to this area of cycling June September my opinion are the best months July August can be very hot here in the mountains You would not believe it but it is Another cyclist Hello Interesting in Austria I don’t know if it’s happening in other countries as well A lot of young ladies are on the road bikes now It’s very big fashion now Lovely to see Not a bad spot I would say Can’t believe Friday How peaceful it is Nobody around Hardly any traffic Here we go This is the steepest part of the whole climb 16% coming up shortly So the steepest part is actually here through the tunnel The next bit quite steep Yeah After the tunnel 3 400 m steep I would say 18% Here it just uh eases off now again Here we go Offgate almost on top So this is the koutai uh spiky So basically produce electricity here Man-made feeds the grit for all the big hotels down in the style See these beautiful mountains yeah Almost 3,000 These are less than 100 m elevation missing Yeah They you see all these containers ahead of me Th this basically this is head office of the new project up there You know they build another dam you know hydro power made in Austria obviously once they’re finished then they going to take these containers down Here we are koutai Yeah Last kicker couple of hundred mters 10% quite a lot of hotels all abandoned now during the summer time basically but winter time very popular very accessible you can fly to insbrook Munich short hope you’re here yeah welcome to koutai 2020 mters exactly Oh it’s getting a bit nippy now Don’t forget to bring your jacket I’ve got [Music] one Have these barriers for the cows All right ladies and gentlemen put my sheila on and my good old jacket We made it to the top of the beautiful Coutai subtle pass And now we’re heading down direction in Spok And I’m looking forward to have some good Austrian lunch down there somewhere Yeah this downhill now is quite a long one very steep one and uh very very fast 100ks an hour you can have here No problem But I always say if you want to gain time go uphill fast Take it easy downhill Yeah this climb here from although it’s quite a long one and quite some elevation gain Let me check quick So basically 1,310 m I started a bit outside of her s and 23ks So it’s quite quite a pass here But apart from some uh short nasty kickers nothing to fear really Uh just have your pace and take it easy You will make it up here Uh no doubt Folks that’s me done now Thanks for watching this little video Another one I know it was quite a while but uh subscribe to the channel if you don’t mind It’s free and I will provide you with more beautiful content to get you into that cycle mood to inspire you to hop on your bike and travel the world Well thanks very much Cheerio Greetings from Coutai Bye-bye [Music]
