I’m sure you could eke out some chill rides to the corner store on it, but it’s kind of a ticking time bomb where you don’t know how many rides it has left. Could be five years from now, could be next week when you hit a pothole.

For everyone saying abandon it, is there any reason you can’t grind it wider and hit it with a fresh weld? Sure it’ll ruin the paint but better than abandoning an entire frame

Can I ask if this is 7005 aluminum that came stock with a cromo fork??
I have a theory that 7005 headtube with a cromo fork is the worst combination of material that takes constant impact. I too have a classic GT frame from 95 that has suffered the exact same fate. I’m devastated.
I’m going to try the same method here sometime in the future – heating mild steel and ring supporting it. The only trouble is GT welds on aluminum frames are phat and I can’t seem to find room to put a ring or brace on it.
edit- with that said, looking at yours I’d start with a simple shaft collar on ebay with the same outer dia as your headtube. With this fix, it is forever a light duties only bike, pub rig only. No more trails or high speeds =(

Aluminium, huh…yeah, it is cooked.

Hey OP. Please discard immediately. The best case is slow-motion a ***“forks and front wheel come off in your hands while stationary”***
Worst case is ***“Headtube snaps at 20mph, resulting in a fast moving human being stopped by a sharp shard of aluminium”***

Yes. Frame is toast after that.
It’s one of those things people need to look for (and don’t think to) when buying a used alloy bike.

Yeah that’s for the bin
Also might be worth damaging the frame more obviously, so no one else tries to ignore this when they see it in the skip

Yes, it’s broken

I’d still use it for gentle neighborhood street rides, but no more bunnyhops or endos.

Frame swap time

That’s not an uncommon failure for aluminium frames. New frame time!

Both my 90’s Aluminum Specialized frames died the exact same way, A Blue 95 RockHopper and my well loved 94 S-Works Stumpjumper HT. Time to find a replacement frame, and hang this one up on the wall before it knocks out your teeth or worse.
