Noticed I wasn't able shift into the higher gears and eventually found this… the shifter cable completely frayed inside the shifter. Thankfully I was able to pull it out and replace it without it getting stuck in the shifter.

This bike is only 2 years old and I've done less than 5k km on it, and it's the part of the cable that is always inside the shifter. How does that even happen? Is there a way of preventing this? It's Sora R3000 if it matters.

It happens if you set the maximum after the cable tension, I think. Please correct if I’m wrong.

  2. It’s normal for Shimano. Cables are cheap consumables so just change them every now and then.

Ultegra 6000 by chance? I change my rear derailleur cable about once a season now. The sharp bend in the housing is not friendly to cables.

Unfortunately this is a common problem with Shimano systems. The design of the mechanism puts a lot of stress on the cables, this is because the cables have to make a very tight turn before exiting the shifter. The mechanism then bends the cable and puts tension on it every time you shift.

The only thing you can do is more regular maintenance/check, and change the cables more often. Also, I have found that stainless steel cable perform better than the coated cables in the long run.

  5. I experienced the same problem with the r3000 shifters. But i didn’t notice this fault until the cable completely snapped of while shifting.

  6. just had the same failure on a 9 year old 105 11s cable at around 3000 miles. this thread is helpful as now I know it’s not my shifting habits and instead is just a design failure and something I should have replaced earlier as preventative maintenance

I go around the inside of the shifter housing with a small neodymium magnet to get all the wire fragments out of there. I’m always surprised how many I pull out and wonder what they would have done to shifting performance had I not done so. (ST-6700)
