Today, the bike lane was blocked (per usual) by an Amazon delivery truck. This is the same bike lane that I’ve complained about previously because it is the missing link to be able to take my son to day car by bike (on a route that I consider safe, as a parent). I slowed down and asked (in as polite / professional of a tone as I could muster) “can you please move your truck so that I can ride safely here? You aren’t allowed to park in the bike lane”. She got really upset and responds “well then where am I supposed to park?? I’m trying to work here!” and I pointed about 50 feet ahead and said “there’s an available loading zone right there. If you don’t move, I’ll report you to the city and you’ll get a citation.” She got super mad but actually stopped unloading packages, got in her truck, and moved to the loading zone, which allowed me to pass by in the bike lane. I stopped by her window and said “thank you, I really really do appreciate it” she yelled “DON’T TALK TO ME” and picked up her phone (maybe calling a supervisor to complain about the exchange? I empathize that delivery drivers are trying to work and they probably don’t receive guidelines on bike lane obstruction during training?

Overall, I think that this was a good thing to do? Hopefully she’ll be less likely to park in the bike lane again to avoid annoying interactions from other bike commuters. I’m debating wether to submit a report—if I do, I’ll mention that we had an interaction and that she moved. What do you think?

Also: I have previously reported USPS for blocking this bike lane — today the USPS truck was parked in an actual parking spot so… maybe not a coincidence
