It’s common knowledge that bike prices are crazy right now, but is the UK suffering more than most?

  1. All top tier mainstream bikes are a complete rip off!!!. £12/13000 you are having a laugh! Over 95% of carbon frames are made in China or Taiwan and there is not a carbon lay up that the Chinese factories put together that costs over£500 to manufacture!. Cycling unfortunately is the new golf!!.

  2. Yeah, that Kookaburra/Phil Burt vid stayed with me too. But even macro-adjusters like me have their limits. I reduced saddle set-back by 10mm to counter sliding forwards, and strained the eff out of my quads. Surprisingly strong effect for such a small change. Backing it off 5mm did the trick. Everyone’s body geometry and tolerances are different.

  3. I don't understand the preoccupation with competitively priced western bikes. The big 3 brands outsource from the East so what is the problem of buying lesser known bike brands from the east that has UCI approval. Isn't that a smarter buy?

  4. Its brand nobs that suffer. Forget about brands and be happy… get a good non brand frame and built it up. and you will be your best bike fitter.😊

  5. The groupset has an influence. It not using one from the main suppliers has to be good. A local bike builder imports a carbon frame set from China and uses Sensah groupsets. It's still not that cheap, but it is very good value. Moire people here should look at other offerings.

  6. I just looked at bike chain store locally here in Australia, their cheapest gravel bike (kind of a no-name brand) was AUD $649 which is USD 420, GPB 310, EUR 368. Shimano Tourney 7 speed. A Merida Silex 200 is AUD 1258, Sora 9 speed, a bit under twice the price.

For easy comparison with others on the exact same bike

The top of the line Canyon Grail CFR AXS w/ "SRAM RED XPLR AXS, Zipp 303 XPLR SW" is AUD 12849 or USD 8312, GBP 6142, EUR 7290. The cheapest in-stock Canyon gravel bike is a Grizl 5 w/ "Shimano CUES 10-speed, DT Swiss Gravel LN" for AUD 2349 — USD 1520, GBP 1123, EUR 1333.

The Giant TCR Advanced SL 0 DA, comes with Dura-Ace Di2, Cadex Max 40 wheels, etc, is AUD 13799 or USD 8931, GPB 6598, EUR 7833.

Factor Ostro VAM "premium package" (frame form handlebars seatpost and a ceramic speed BB) is "from" AUD 9299 or USD 6024. One with Shimano Ultegra is "from" AUD 16099 or USD 10430.

S-Works Tarmac SL8 with Dura-Ace Di2 is AUD 20900, or USD 13540. S-Works SL8 frameset is AUD 9500. Specialized Tarmac SL8 Pro with Ultegra Di2 is AUD 12500. A rather lovely looking purple and pink Allez Sprint Comp with Shimano 105 (I think it's the 12 speed mechanical 105) is AUD 4200, or USD 2723. The base level Allez is AUD 1500, or USD 973.

  7. There’s a lot of bike snobbery from ‘influencers’ here on YouTube. Shop around there’s good secondhand bargains or some online outlets selling off stock from manufacturers at daft prices (just bagged a bike with 58% off RRP and the online manufacturer are still selling at full RRP 🤷🏻‍♂️).

  8. Normally I would agree with you, but read about the UK Doctor who had to sue planet X's insurers because PX sold him a gravel bike and on the first outing, the fork failed catastrophically and left him a paralysed.
The big brands like to give the impression at least that their quality control, service etc is better.
This does play on my mind a bit as a larger gent, but I have resto modded a couple of used bikes with parts from aliexpress. There are several "influencers" who do cover Aliexpress bikes and components, and there's a great forum that discusses this in depth (Chinercycling)

I have a full carbon bike from PX and my wife even has the exact same bike that the dr was riding, bought only a few months before him, though we have been very happy with our our bikes

  9. Hi Peter. I've actually done a lot of research on this bike. It's made by Kent International(largest bike manufacturer in the world 4.2 million bikes per year). They make all of Walmart bikes. All assembled in US. All with Chinese parts. They have lots of brands. Yes, this bike is a screaming deal. The brakes and the groupset being it's biggest drawback. I just ordered this bike and it's being delivered today. The plan is to replace the drivetrain eventually with Wheeltop gravel, get some good used gravel wheels. That'll fix both challenges longterm. Short term, i ordered a Topeak seatpost and a 12-32 cassette for better range, and a 3d saddle. That should bring it down to about 13+ K.

The sad part, is that Kent International released a statement that they will cease production in light of the tariff wars we are currently in. That might be changing in real time since so are the tariffs. Lol. The orange man needs to stop it.

This rig is going to be my bikepacking rig, and light snow commuter. I'll let you know how it goes. Btw….i did 80km yesterday on that ttx42. It is such a wonderful bike! Have a blessed day!

  10. If you can build bikes they cost literally nothing or very little, my current gravel bike is 4-5 different bikes and cost £6 and that was for bar tape from Halfords. Check your local recycling centres, you'd be surprised what people throw out to save dealing with marketplace messers👍

  11. depends what you buy. if you obsessed with tiny gains from new tech then its going to cost you. The main bike i have at the moment is a Cinelli Hobootleg its steel framed has rim brakes triple front gear set manual everything i plan on cycling 1000 miles in 5 days on a ride called LEL in august its not the best up hill but then im far so neither am I. It cost less than £800 on the cycle to work scheme

  12. I've just paid Can$ 999 for a bike + sales tax from the manufacturer's outlet. The same model is quoted on the manufacturer's UK web site at GBP 699. Dividing by 1.2 to remove sales tax, and multiplying by 1.837 for the exchange rate comes to 1070. Does not seem like that much difference.

  13. Love a Jimmy video!
I think a lot of it is down to still trying to chase the margins they saw in Covid, the cycle to work scheme keeps the very top end going as people who would spend 1-2k on a bike now spend 5-6.
