Recently have been lucky enough to get back into cycling. While browsing my local bike shops I found a Bianchi Pista Old Deadstock chrome I believe from 2018. With getting back into cycling I have it on the freewheel versus fixed. Main reason being I have large hills to go up and down. The main reason I have not made the change to fixed is for the downhill parts of my ride. Any tips or recommendations to get myself prepared for large downhills. I have upgraded my pedals and purchased straps otherwise all stock. Thanks in advance!

Control your speed, never let the bike exceed a speed you cannot slow down from

Hop skids, ocassional skidding and backpedaling are a required on a steep descent

Just flop the hub to fixed and keep your brakes till you’re comfortable. You will get used to it

  3. If hills are really steep – ride with front brake.
I’m riding breakless since bought my fixie in 2019, but in 2023 the way to work had one large hill, so I changed my gears to 49/20 and put front brake for easier climbing’s and downhills. Although, rear tire was destroyed even with brake, because I’m was not used to it.

Ride that brake!!! Seriously though, I take mine out for some long rides in the hills. There are several big hills that I absolutely HAVE to use the brakes on. Hop skid or full skid and I wouldn’t make it home for the lack of rubber left on the tire!

I run a 19 tooth rear. A little spinny on downhills but I can pedal up all but the steepest hills in my city easy
