I’ve been experiencing some wrist discomfort on longer rides/commutes. Nothing significant but I would consider it an irritant more than anything and realized that I would benefit from some optional hand positions.
In true xbiking fashion I went down the rabbit hole and had convinced myself that I would replace my Surly Sunrise bar with something like a Surly Corner bar. After spending the evening on YouTube and Reddit scouring reviews, I went from putting a Surly Corner bar and some bar tape in my cart, to then putting some Ergon GP3 Evo grips in my cart, to finally seeing posts about “inner bar ends”. Needless to say, I dug some 90s bar ends out of my parts bin, along with a pair of stock Kona grips that came with my Dew Plus, paired with some bar plugs from my pogies, and here we are. In less than 24hrs I solved the problem and spent $0! It couldn’t have worked out better.
Honestly, this is a game changer for me. For commuting this is by far my preferred hand position – it’s like redneck aero. Plus it allows me to keep my Sunrise bar which is great for just cruising around town or the neighbourhood with my kids.

Yup! Love my inner bar ends!
Do your bars elevate towards the end? Sunrise bars (even more so, Sunset bars) have a rise unless you tilt them back toward the rider. This is a problem because there is literally no natural position where your pinkie knuckle should be higher than your index knuckle, in *any* daily activity. Easily leads to discomfort over extended periods, especially with vibrations involved.
Anyway, some people are okay with the setup, but obviously it makes me want to die, maybe you too.
you got yerself a gun rack right there. would look nice with a winchester
