  1. Capped at 20mph sure, anything above that no. That also gotta be the dumbest form of micro mobility.

EUC is a one wheeled ebike basically. They should be allowed where other ebikes are and subject to the same rules. Being compact isn’t a crime for brompton.

  3. If the assholes who drove these, weren’t reckless and dangerous to everyone the meet, then yes. But they also drive recklessly on roads, sidewalks, bike lanes. They have no protection, so they do what they think is necessary to survive, but that causes them to behave in VERY unexpected ways so no one knows what they are going to do.

Every single person I’ve seen operate one of these drives it too fast and recklessly around others that I can universalize that they are assholes.

Personally I hate the guy who buzzes me on my trail, but I don’t want to ban the tech.

  5. I don’t mind if they:

    – are going less than 25 km/h, especially when near pedestrians and other slow users

    – use a bell or voice before passing

    – signal their turns

  6. I gotta admit that I wasn’t sure about these, but when they started showing up to my city’s Critical Mass rides the riders were all super cool about stuff and spent a good amount of time corking and looking out for the ride. I’m good with letting them be inside the proverbial tent, and we should talk about how to improve our paths such that they minimize conflicts between micro mobility like EUCs, pedestrians, and cyclists.

In principle I have nothing against them. Small, quiet, someone who wants to get from A to B without fighting car traffic. In reality, they are too often completely irresponsible: high speeds, weaving around the rest of us like a video game. Headphones on and/or looking at a phone. They act like they own the whole path and it’s so rude. I wish there was some way to allow them and other ebikes to share in a respectful way.

    MUPs are for multi-use

Same rules as we follow. Don’t be a cunt and buzz peds.

I know they can go well over 20 mph which is one issue.

However, I’m more concerned with How quickly they stop.

No firsthand knowledge, but my guess is that it takes no practice to go 20mph+ but takes a whole lot of practice to effectively stop for poodles on retractable leashes and off-leash children.

The ‘M’ is multi so I suppose so but under the rules we all follow.

  11. It’s not the eBikes/one wheelers that are the problem, it’s the people being a-holes. There are a-holes on bikes, on foot, walking dogs, on skateboards, and in wheelchairs (yes I’ve seen it). If there are enough eBikes/one wheeler being a-holes then the city or whatever park system will do what they need to do to address the issue, usually a ban.

I only (pedal) bike and as long as I have a heads up (bell, on your left) whizz on by at a safe distance, have fun, enjoy the speed. I do the same for pedestrians and slower bikes etc.

  12. It’s not really the choice of wheel(s), it’s how fast they go when pedestrians are around.  If people can self police and maintain a safe space around pedestrians we can all live in peace.  Blow by me at 20+ mph and it’s war.

  13. I don’t care if they’re there as long as they don’t interfere with other people or cause a risk to others.

  14. peacefulhectarez on

Why not? As long as they’re not riding like dicks I don’t see how these are any different than any other wheeled vehicle on the path. An adult in decent shape on a road bike is just as fast.

  15. It’s not the machine, it’s the rider. Assholes come on all types of machines.

No different than cars in that respect. Or motorcycles.

  16. Ok-Worry-1715 on

Used properly is not problem at all.
A class 2 safety vest is recommended.

  17. I’ve seen these things out in 40mph traffic and the guys wearing a full motorcycle race suit.

That kind of speeds I would say no. If they are being responsible and not going too fast no big deal I guess.

But who cares, I see about 500 idiots doing stupid things on eBikes for every one person I see riding one of these, and I’ve barely ever seen any one riding these things irresponsibly.

These aren’t that easy to ride and require commitment, that limits how many people will do it and discourages idiots/jerks.

  18. The issue is so many people don’t follow the rules. I get passed by these and those monster e-scooters doing 50+ in the bike infrastructure here in nyc all the time. If you can keep up with traffic you should be on the road.

  19. My thing is….they are motor vehicles. They are in no way propelled by muscular power.
They are not as able to stop as a bike. And they ABSOLUTELY could cause injury to someone else (shattered ankle etc).
Yet there is no obligation for the rider to carry insurance.

  20. DarthSamwiseAtreides on

Yea, I think speed is more important.  I’ve seen lycra group rides drafting each other bombing down the trail and kinda though they should ride somewhere else.  So with these dudes and e bikes and scooters I think if they can keep it to under 18 mph I’m fine.

I’d love to see bike infrastructure with bike lanes and electric lanes, but I’m not going to see that in my area for possible ever.

  21. allislost77 on

If they are abiding by the “rules of the road”, but I haven’t seen one doing that. There’s two pretty frequently on the path by my house, bombing the path doing at least 20-25mph, weaving around runners, walkers with children/dogs and not slowing down or letting anyone know they are passing. Accident waiting to happen. I also see them in traffic frequently, doing the same stupid shit…

  22. ArnoldGravy on

Motor vehicles on MUPs need to be governed at 20mph otherwise they are too dangerous.

  23. Nothing that doesn’t need at least a bit of human power belongs on a MUP. Yes this includes class 2 ebikes, or hybrid class 2&3 (which are actually neither class) ebikes.

Additionally they would need dual braking systems as well, fixie + front brake or front&rear brakes.
