Colibița Lake (Lacul Colibița) is an artificial lake nestled in the Călimani Mountains, in Bistrița-Năsăud County, Romania. Located at an altitude of approximately 900 meters, it is surrounded by stunning mountain scenery, dense forests, and clean, ozone-rich air—features that have earned it the nickname “the Lake Como of Romania.”
The lake was formed in the 1970s by damming the Bistrița Ardeleană River, primarily for hydroelectric power and flood control. During the construction, the original village of Colibița was submerged, and a new settlement developed along the shores of the newly created lake.
Colibița is a popular destination for nature lovers, offering activities such as fishing, kayaking, paddleboarding, hiking, and mountain biking. Its tranquil setting, combined with the growing number of luxury villas, guesthouses, and wellness retreats, has transformed the area into a high-end tourist hub, reminiscent of the charm and exclusivity associated with Lake Como in Italy.
The lake is also surrounded by local legends—such as the submerged church visible when water levels drop, and eerie tales of strange sounds from the depths—that add to its mysterious allure. Colibița Lake is easily accessible by road from Bistrița, about 50 kilometers away, and serves as a gateway to trails and natural attractions in the Călimani Mountains.
