  1. Look up restoration techniques. Don’t patch the paint, rechrome, or do anything except clean. I’d do a complete teardown, flush and treat the inside of the tubes, clean and polish everything. Anything perished I’d replace, but keep the original. Then ride it. should ride very nicely.

Wow, what a beautiful find! I’d throw some new tubes and tires on it (and probably a Brooks saddle, seems appropriate) and enjoy. You could go full on restoration and keep it locked away to look at, but I wouldn’t. It’s a way cooler story and bike to share with folks.

Edit: see better saddle advice below!

  3. Love the color. My guess is it may need new cables just from aging. I would replace the brake pads if original. Check the chain with a chain tool for wear. The rest, clean and lube and see what you have. Iโ€™m not a mechanic by trade, just a regular cyclist on Reddit handing out amateur advice. ๐Ÿ˜…

New cables and housing, new brake pads, new tires, tubes, and rim strips, new bar tape.

If it were me I would overhaul both wheel hubs, the headset, and see whatsup with the BB

When that bike was new Shimano was relatively new to the cycling scene and soย  Suntour and Campy were still considered “better” by the vast majority of serious riders, but as we can see now that time has passed, Shimano held up well to the test of time.ย

I gotta be honest having gone through a vintage bike phase: The cockpits/drop bar designs on those older bikes is honestly ass compared to a modern road bike and genuinely started to ruin the riding experience for me.

Ended up finding an “aesthetically compatible” quill stem that converted to modern diameter, modern shallow drop bar and modern grip brake-only “brifter”. TRP has some modern geometry grips but that respect a more vintage aesthetic.

You may also find braking force is not what you expect coming from modern bikes, especially if you ride disc.
