I'm looking for a part-commuter/part-gravel/part-weekend warrior/part-child trailer hauler bike. I've explored Surly, Kona, Crust, Salsa, Port Albion, Milwaukee, Trek, etc but have my sights set on the more classic simple steel frame and not cost $3000 lol. I've honed in on the Marin Four Corners ($1499CAD) and the Brodie Romulus ($1549CAD). I like the idea that I can run wider tires on the Brodie (650bx50c) compared to the Marin (650bx40c), I like options but I'm not sure how much of a difference that would make. I do like the colours more on the Marin.
I'm coming from a dual suspension MTB with the baldest tires you've seen and no mounts for a rack and panniers which kills my commute enjoyment. Before that I rode a single speed for a number of years and I'm looking for something in between. I want a bevy of gears for my 22km/day round trip commute and want the ability to throw a basket in the front or rack in the back and haul my gear to work everyday.
Wondering which of these bikes has the best components – wheels, cranks, hubs. etc? I've also come across the Brodie Torque 2.0 ($1599) which has piqued my interest. For the extra $50 is this a better option? No matter the bike I will probably put aggressive upright bars and a basket almost immediately for style and comfort. Any advice is appreciated!
