So it seems I created a gallery on my last post.. lets try this again..

I got this old Peugeot bike from a marketplace this week (bike is located in Europe, history unknown), to use as a daily driver for errands and so on.

I was planning on servicing this bike to make it more reliable and perhaps better performing, but as a novice I am limited on my skills and tools to perform more challenging repairs and replacements.

From what Google and other sources tell me, this might be a lower/mid-range department store Peugeot so nothing fancy. But I cant find and serial or model number on the bike to confirm what model it really is and start looking for accurate information on how to service it and what parts would be compatible for it (I guess this will be hard even if I knew the model).

I tried to browse through the catalogues from bikeboompeugeot.com but couldnt identify this bike from the catalogues.

But here's what I know of the bike:

  1. Simplex friction shifting gears (front and back derailleurs)
  2. Macaf or Mafac? centerpull brakes
  3. Peugeot crank (prob original)
  4. Peugeot 103 Tube Special frame? According the sticker on the downtube
  5. Most likely an European model

I'm planning to replace/repair the following:

  • Replace rear cassette (2×6)
  • Replace rear derailleur cogs (or clean thoroughly)
  • Replace crank cogs (or the whole crank if cogs cant be replaced or needs special tools)
  • Replace the chain
  • Replace worn brake pads or the brakes completely (I think its a centerpull brake system)
  • Repair friction shifting..somehow.. now the largest and smallest gears aren't engaging in the rear and shifts seem pretty random when I move the levers. Might be because of the worn drivetrain parts though.

So basically drivetrain replacements and brakes are first up on the list, and if I dont lose my mind I will start looking for more improvements to be made (and more tools to purchase).

So if anyone has any pointers or tips (or even better, documentation/websites/blogs etc) on how I could go on identifying and servicing this bike, would be much appreciated! And if anyone has done project like this, I would like to know if there are any modern parts that could be used directly, so I dont need to go hunting for older parts from yard sales etc.

Edit to add 26.5.2025:
I think I've figured it out, this bike seems to be a '79 or '80 Peugeot PX 8/M-D "Super Sport" from the 1979-1981 era, before they changed from 103 Tube Special to Carbolite and in '81 they changed the cassette guard from metal to plastic on the rear wheel.
