I’m a backpacker and a fisherman. Got interested in bikepacking this year and want to ride into the backcountry and camp. Have a few routes mapped out, an easy overnighter to test my setup and a few longer 2-3 day trips around Southern California and the eastern sierras.
Bought a new specialized rockhopper comp (last seasons I think cause it was on sale for $600 online when the new ones were like $900) and have been training for a few months learning to ride better on single track. Got a cheap custom frame bag, top tube bag, rack and handlebar mount for the 2 dry bags. Looks kind of goofy IMO but right now I don’t have a ton of money to put into this. Just want to get out.
Have started riding it loaded on this 8 mile loop around my house, about equal amounts paved/gravel road/single track. Feels just fine to me when riding. Also got an old garmin that I loaded my gpx files onto so I don’t get lost, and some basic tools and spare tire even though I’m not really a bike guy. Have changed a few tires and adjusted the gear tension on another bike but that’s it.
Anything I should do before my first overnighter? Anything I should change with my setup? Also going to have one of my old climbing chalk bags on the right side for a feeder bag, and I wear a small hydration backpack when riding (I don’t sweat a lot). Whatcho guys think?
