    Can you replace it with an external retaining ring that has holes for the pins? Probably too much effort bit that’s what should have been used here

    Perhaps you could start by getting one side of the split ring into the groove and just kinda work it on little bits at a time. Shouldn’t be too hard, but patience is helpful. Good luck!

  3. Wow I’ve never had a hard time with these. Left thumb hold down the left end while flat blade levers the right side in.

    Align it so the split is at the midpoint between two notches, then put the point of a sturdy awl/screwdriver in one of the closest notches and lever the ring open into place, then do the same at the other closest notch and the whole ring will pop into place. Keep practising and once you have the knack it becomes the easiest thing in the world
