Hey all. I have a set of Maxxis DHF (rear) and ASSEGAI (front) both Maxx Terra 3C. I ride sandy trails and feel like I’m starting to slip now and then. I ride a 54lb e-bike if that helps at all. How’s the wear looking and is it likely time for new tires? Thanks!

No those look barely worn.
Those look damn near pristine. You’re slipping because you’re riding a 54lb e-bike in the sand lmao
Tread looks fine. Consider tire insert so you can lower pressures more. Sand needs fairly low pressures, but in my experience anything but a fat bike is going to slip in sand. It’s more about regulating your gearing and torque to keep grip and aiming for parts of the trail where you can get a little traction. Also just getting used to sliding in sand some.
looks brand new, for me my indication for when to replace the tire is when the side knobs start “under cutting” or they start ripping at the base of the side knobs taking off good chunks from the tread.
this is more apparent on the rear and you can start feeling the back end tends to slide out more under cornering, for some people that can be fun, not for me lol.
[here’s an example of one of my rear tires.](https://imgur.com/a/KevPmmb)
i absolutely love the feeling of fresh new tires, it’s very confidence inspiring when they just lock in or hook up into a corner with no drama.
Clearly due for a replacent, best is you hand em straight to me so I can take care of them.
I don’t really understand your tyre choice:
The Assegai is an excellent alround tyre for harder surfaces (think bike-park), not exactly what you want in soft, sandy conditions.
The DHF is a front tyre (a really good one) – and actually a LOT better on the front in your sandy conditions than the Assegai, offering more negative profile.
If you want to
* start from scratch: High Roller III front and DHR II rear, both in 2.6.
* buy just one new tyre: change the DHF to the front and add a DHR II to the rear. I am biased though: I ride this combo on my EMTB all year long.
* go with what you have: change the tyres. The DHF is A LOT better in sandy conditions and will grip better in the front. You’ll use the Assegai up in the rear and replace it with a DHR II in the future.
No, the Assegai isn’t exactly a pleasure to pedal, but hey: we didn’t force you to buy this one for your local trails – you did that to you all by yourself ;o)
Golden. As others mentioned, the side nobs will start tearing when you look at then from the center of tire out – vs the shot you have from the outside looking In. Challenge with the assegai is they have so much grip new, you’ll notice the slip “more” when they start to wear more than other tires.
I run the dueling AssGs for the winter, then swap for the DHR2 in rear for summer. Always DD in the rear. Turbo levo Comp and I’m 6’1 205. With cushcores, I run between 21/23 to 23/25 psi depending on conditions. You can notice the sidewalls start to show cross marks if you’re running too low a pressure (and feel them roll).
You’re on an e-bike and either going too fast in the corners or need to work on your cornering technique. However, switching to maxxgrip compound will help. I don’t recommend lowering your pressure unless you get DH casing tires. Yes lower pressure does increase grip in a straight line but the tires will start squirming in corners unless you run stiffer casing.
