After riding the 2021 Cube Nuroad Race FE for 4.5 years on stock wheels, I finally upgraded the wheels to the G1800 Dynamo set that was released last year. As I‘m a big fan of DT Swiss wheels, specifically the 1800 range, I‘m very happy. The bike rides likes like a charm! I upgraded the ratchet to 36T and installed MT800 discs. The cassette and tyres were taken over. It‘s a 11-40 SLX cassette and 40mm G-One Allround.

1600 is what I usually recommend for alloy rims. 1800 is a budget wheel, but still a LOT better than the stock wheels. Stock wheels are actually kind of nasty IMO. DT Swiss upgraded the hubs in the 1800 range a few years ago making them much better and you’ll get many years out of those wheels. I like the idea of the hub dynamo for urban riding.

I just had a friends new Nuroad Race in my workshop for assembly. I fitted a 28T chainring and modified 11-40 cassette to 14-40. Stock chain is too short (it looked like 112 but I didn’t measure it) for even 34T cassette and I used a full 118 link Wipperman 11SX. Fine for 28/14, but you might need 116T. I notice the difference in chain wrap, lower pulley relative to wheel axle and derailleur angle on only the 31T sprocket looking at your photo. Gears just work okay with B-screw adjustment. I design and build frames and bikes and I couldn’t give it back like that. I converted from direct mount hanger to conventional hanger with 8651 (18-05493) hanger and Woolftooth Roadlink DM B-link. There is a world of difference and highly recommended.

I see you’ve done other changes. Seat, bars and brake rotors. We changed the stem (there was a screw missing out of the box and it was the wrong length anyway) and that ugly seat post, GRX800 cranks, 180mm brake rotors. I converted the wheels to tubeless with 45mm Schwalbe Overland (straight swap for the Allround). We added Garmin power meter pedals, Edge 540, RCT715, front GoPro, Acid rack with Topeak top pack adapter, Topeak rear basket, Ortlieb saddlebags, Topeak top tube bag (headlight battery goes in there), old stock ISM saddle, inline cable adjusters, Pro Missile aerobars set up for comfort, Gloworm 3600 headlight, Italian road bike mirror under Guee silicone bar tape, Pro bottle cages and transparent grey bottles to match the colours of the bike.

This is her “cheap” commuter! The bike cost something like €1100 in a clearance sale, but pedals were only slightly less and the rest added up very quickly. She has 45km each way commute on paved and gravel cycle paths five days a week and this bike should do the job well.
