  1. Have you asked the chip where it came from?

But seriously, a bit of touch up paint will do the trick to cover it up and basically any kind of tape will help to protect the frame from damage in the future. I tend to use electrical tape wrapped nicely – it’s cheap, easily replaceable, fairly thick, and black in colour to help hide any chain grime that gets on that area of the frame.

  2. There are chainstay savers readily available for next to none. I got some from AliExpress.

That said, most slap chips I’ve seen are on the top side, not the bottom one.

  3. Sure looks like it.

Don’t use packing/shipping tape. It’ll look like crap, won’t stick well, won’t work well, will yellow, and will peel in the heat and leave adhesive residue.

I like 3M / Scotch 2228 mastic electrical tape. It’s a thick rubber tape that sticks and peels off nicely. Or just get some polyurethane (aka helicopter) tape.

Or if you are being really cheap, go old school and wrap old bar tape around there. Or a piece of tire. You didn’t throw those out, did you? 😉

  4. You can buy neoprene chainstay protectors for this they just wrap around the chainstay and secure back on tgemselves with velcro. Many colours available they are around £2 from ebay etc

  5. Marks look like a chain hit but I’ve also been the victim of other pieces of debris hitting my bike. Some flung from car wheels.
Use whatever you’re comfortable with to protect your frame, lots of good options out there.
