Located near the city of Magdabberg, this impressive structure is the longest navigable aqueduct in the world, stretching a remarkable 918 m in length. The bridge connects two major canals. The Midland canal on the west side and the Elba Havl Canal on the east side. This connection allows vessels to cross over the Elba River directly, eliminating the need for a complicated dedor. Before the bridge was built, ships had to navigate a lengthy 12 km route that involved descending into the Elba River and then entering the Elba Havl Canal through locks. This process was not only time-conuming but also often hampered by low water levels which could restrict fully loaded barges and cause delays. Construction of the Magnabberg water bridge took place between 1997 and 2003. Although plans for the bridge date back to the early 20th century, the project faced interruptions due to World War Roman 2 and the division of Germany, which delayed its completion until after reunification. The total cost of the bridge was around €500 million and it required massive engineering efforts including the use of 68,000 cub m of concrete and 24 tons of steel. Structurally the bridge is designed as a beam bridge with a width of 34 m and a water depth of 4.25 m. This design allows large vessels to pass through without any issues. The bridge consists of two main parts, the main bridge and the approach bridge. Both sections are supported by massive concrete towers and feature a double lock system that enables smooth transitions between different water levels.
