Seeking some assistance as I don’t have a carbon testing facility close to me. I have discovered 2 different cracks through the paint layer and I’m wondering what people’s opinions are regarding the likelihood there is carbon damage too.

I know there is no sure way of telling without ultrasound but I thought I’d get some opinions from people know know more than me as a starting point. I have done a coin test and there is no noticeable difference in sound.

If the coin test shows no difference you’re likely fine. Carbon flexes and paint doesn’t always do the same. Keep riding or if you’re really worried you can send it in to a carbon repair shop and have them throw a few layers over it.

  2. Impossible to tell. It could very well just be the gelcoat blistering or you could have carbon damage underneath. Gelcoat is the “paint” they use on carbon and fiberglass. It goes on in a lot thicker layer than traditional paint. If the carbon has any flex or movement in the area it’s possible to see gelcoat blistering/cracking when they don’t move at the same rate.

One of the cracks is at the top of the shock tunnel and from what I can tell a small rock or similar has made an impact mark (the larger mark) and then thr pain has splintered away from the impact. The second one however is a little harder to assess. It’s on the inside of the top arm on the rear triangle. It looks like something has shot up from the tyre, done through the ride wrap and then at a minimum damaged and splintered the pain. Here is another photo where you can see the ride wrap.
