Hi friends—longtime lurker, first time poster here. Recently splurged on some new MAAP kit as a birthday gift to myself and feeling a little unsure about the fit. Figured I’d ask for a second opinion as I’ve never purchased from MAAP and want to make sure I’ve made a decent investment given the cost.
For context, I usually wear a medium in Rapha gear. I’ve gained about 20 in the last year (a good deal in my midsection; I’m working on it) and have needed to size up to large in some brands like Ornot and Pactimo.
First photo is the Alt_Road Jersey (size L) and Alt_Road Cargo Bibs (size L). Everything feels comfortable here, though the jersey is a bit looser. Second is the training jersey (L) and Team Bib Eve Cargo (L). This feels more like a fit I’m used to—snug but not like a sausage casing.
Overall I feel good in these kits but would appreciate any thoughts or advice. Thanks in advance! Ride safe, friends. 😊

Well, first and foremost the golden rule is whatever you’re comfortable with. Yes there will be some industry standards, however if you’re uneasy in the clothing to begin with, your rides will not be enjoyable. Secondly you have to have an open mindset. There are two factors you brought up: gaining weight in the midsection and that it’s your first apparel investment. Personally i know a jersey is too big on me when I do the fist test: grab the zipped up jersey in the chest section and see how much material builds up. If it’s on the brink of ripping, the size is more or less what you’re looking for. If you collect a good amount of material, the jersey is too big. Also in the riding position you do not want to have too much excess fabric bunched up.
Ask yourself, what is your target weight. If you plan on losing the weight you put on and then maintain that or even going lower, the jersey you currently have on right now won’t be a fit long term. If you’re looking at short term aesthetics then be happy with the purchase as long at the fit is ok for your current size. I also find bibs degrade over time way faster than jerseys. I always prioritise comfort regardless at what body size I am. That being said I would personally keep the Maap bib but swap the jersey for one of lower value especially if I know it will be too big on me in the coming weeks/months.
I looked at the images then read your post.
I 100% agree with your assessment, #2 is a better fit as long as you’re still comfortable which it sounds like you are.
The colors also are more vibrant and fun imo
