Hey everyone, I’m new to biking and looking for something affordable to get started. I came across this 53cm Specialized Allez Sport on Facebook Marketplace listed for $90. It says it “shifts great” but mentions “slight damage to the front brake cover” and “aftermarket hybrid pedals.”
Photos attached — I’m wondering:
• Is this a good deal at $90?
• Could I offer lower considering the condition?
• Does it look like it’ll need costly repairs?
• Is this a solid starter bike overall?
I’d rather not sink money into major fixes right off the bat, but I’m open to small repairs. Thanks in advance for any advice!

if a 53cm frame is the right size for you, that is a fantastic first road bike for $90.
it’s older stuff but any bike store brand road bike (specialized, trek, giant, cannondale, etc) in rideable condition is generally worth about $250 minimum.
Hmm , you are going to have to give something to get the bike so maybe $90 is ok. Honestly it’s so old I put it in the $50 bracket, condition looks good.
If you are just starting in cycling it’s worth to consider what type of riding you will do.
If it’s bike paths that are windy with variable surfaces. I would not buy. These older style racing bikes have super narrow Tyres and a best for road riding. Likewise the gearing is narrower compared to more modern offerings (live in a hilly area ?).
The reason these topics are so important is they will directly impact your motivation to ride and keep riding.
Maybe talk a little about what you want to do.
That is a fantastic bargain starter road bike to dip your toes in and see if you like it. $90 is a pretty great deal for any ‘real brand’ bike. It’s very old, will have narrow tires, and lack a few of the niceties of modern bikes but it’s a really fantastically cheap way to see if you like cycling, and to teach yourself how to wrench if you want to learn.
$90 sounds fair if you fit the frame well. The tires might need replacing which might be another $90 on top of the bike if you go for a good set but it’s still worth it.
