The purist ‘end-to-enders’ might have wanted to close one eye on that day, as we made a brief foray into Spain toward the evening and into the following morning. Our reasoning was that the Spanish route was far better—it allowed us to avoid the congestion and busy roads around Castelo Branco while providing a more scenic and safer reentry point back into Portugal. That easy, rolling day in the saddle gave us some much-needed recovery time after those hilly opening days.
