I have had an even that means a change of sport. Running will be replaced with more biking. My road bike fit is problematic and I need a less aggressive position.

I need some adventure in my life and plan on doing some longer gravel trails, even biking some of my old trail runs for training, and eventually there is the Hunt 1000 that looks like a good challenge.

I have looked at Gravel bikes such as Canyon Grizl but have recently found Bikepacking bikes such as Salsa Cutthroat, and realised that even hard tailed mountain bikes are an option.

How do I decide which way to go? I love my drop bars and would prob put them on any bike. I love the idea of lower seat higher handle bar geometry. But I also love speed:) I can see myself feeling a lack of power in a Mountain Bike position.

I am way out of my depth and don’t have the ability to purchase too many bikes.

Any guidance is appreciated.

  1. Used to ride drop bars for over a decade and the last few years I’ve been riding my krampus everywhere, centuries, commuting, over-nighters, literally everywhere. If you opt for a 29er for the everything bike get a set of schwalbe big ben 29 x 2.10’s for slicks. They’re great, not tubeless compatible tho. Still have a cosmic stallion and a nature boy, don’t ride them nearly as often anymore.

    Top speed on the krampus isn’t as great as either of the other options, however I have won a few alleycats on the krampus, and fixie friends have a hard time keeping up.

    Having a 1x system means less shifting to spin up to cadence and will be less wear on the knees overall. Having a 2x system will increase speed potential, getting the cockpit setup for a good upright position will take a little more time to get dialed in.

    Switched over to the krampus to have better posture in the saddle after something happened that required a lower pressure ride to get back on the bike.
