What do you mean by “wont take our bikes” which train are you trying to get on?

  2. Trenitalia has different train types, on the ones called “regionali veloci” (stands for fast regional trains) you can take bikes on board by paying a fee which is €3,50. The downside is they are fairly slow.

I guess you wanted to take the Frecciarossa, which is high speed and does not allow you to take bikes on board.

Your options are either taking the slower regional or putting your bike in a box as you would do if you were taking a flight and bring it on the frecciarossa. Also you can cycle back or try looking at Flixbus where you can usually store a bike on the outside of the bus. If you need any other infos feel free to DM me. I’m italian and I might be able to help you more

    1. say Good Bye to the idea of catching a high speed train

    2. use the regional trains and take your bikes with you

    3. don’t take those bikes on a high speed train, there is a chance you will be kicked out for taking bicycles on it

I am not sure where you are heading to, but there are some connections you via FlixBus.

If for some reason you can’t get on slower regional trains, you can rent a minivan for next to nothing from the local Hertz and drive yourself.

You might want to try to book an OBB nightjet. It’s an Austrian train but it definitely stops in bologna and Rome.

As far as I know there is no regional train connecting Bologna south to Florence. I took the train from Bologna as far south as I could and
then rode to Florence. There is a bit of climbing.
The expensive alternative would be a one way car (van?) rental.

  8. Regional trains are fine. Took two the other day in Italy at the beginning and end of a ride. My pal even took his on a local bus in the dolomites.

  9. Hey I was in the same position in Bologna last year. In the end I could take a bus (eg Flixbus) where the driver let me put my bike in the luggage area „under“ the bus. With 4 bikes it might be tricky, but maybe you can split up.

I got a big cardboard box and ugly wrote TV on it. Couldn’t have a bike on the train, but a 65″ TV was ok together with the loose bags haha.

There is an intercity train going from Bologna to Rome, the Intercity 583. You can take bikes on it, I’ve done it before, you just need a bike ticket for it. You can book the ticket for yourselves and the bikes right on the trenitalia website. It‘s not as quick as the high speed trains but much quicker than taking regional trains

High recommend traveling through regional train instead of high speed train.
