Hi everyone,

I am planning to buy an Aeroad soon (once they come back in stock), however, I am looking for some wheel advice. I am planning to swap out the default wheels – assuming I will get a version with the Shimano C46's or the DT Swiss ARC 50's – for two main reasons:
1) I am looking for a slightly deeper rim, since where I ride is mostly flat with some occassional hills, plus the fact that I will end up on size XL or 2XL, I think a slightly deeper rim will look better 😄 Also, since I am quite heavy I have no issues with crosswinds
2) With my weight being in the high 90s, I am quite close to the max system weight of 110kg, and while I know that the wheels won't immediately fail if you go above it, I am not fully reassured on it…

So, I am looking for some recommendations or suggestions for wheels that would be a great fit for the Aeroad. Couple of requirements I have:
– +55mm rim depth
– +115kg max system weight
– Hooked rims
– Max budget €1500 (or €1750 for a really good deal 😉)

Although not really a must, I would also prefer hubs with a ratchet rather than pawls, love a louder freehub, and some flashy decals / visible logos is definitely a plus as well. There are a couple of options I have been looking at myself, however, for some of them it is hard to find reviews:
– Vision Metron 60 SL (for some reasons there are some good discounts for these)
– Scope R5
– Ere Research Genus AE65 II
– Newmen Streem Sprint
– DT Swiss ARC1400 62 (should I not be worried about the weight limit??)

Looking forward to your insights!

Why hooked? Hookless is a better/safer design, when done right. Cars used hookless rims for a reason. But you should look at Hunt, Zipp and Scribe. Hunt and Scribe are excellent for the price, competing with Zipps and urge to end wheels, but Zipps notably come with a lifetime warranty that even covers crashes while racing etc, which means a lot on a big purchase, IMO. Or, get the SRAM Force model of the Aeroad and get Zipp 404s out of the box like I did lol.

  2. Buy chinese, way superior to any of the western brands. Elitewheels, Winspace, Farsports whatever.

For me: buy hooked, not hookless (there is 0 advantage to the enduser, but added risk and points if failure, while cheaper to manufacture). Get wide internal rim widths (better fir tubeless and bigger tires) and on an aeroad go deep imo.

I can tell you that the freehub on the scope r5 wheels is really loud, I don’t need my bell anymore…
