It's just the screw at the top of the headset that needs replaced, on a trek marlin 6 gen 2. I have an exact replacement, but I want to ask before I touch this lol. Any tips are appreciated!
That top screw sets the bearing preload in the headset, but only when the two lower bolts are undone. You can replace it without changing the bearing preload because the lower two bolts are tightened down. Go for it.

Best way to find out is to do it and if something does happen YouTube will explain it.

Yes easy to do have a look on amazon for a nice titanium one that won’t rust
why does it need replacing? because of the surface rust? you could touch it up with some paint or find a rubber protector that fits.
and yes, those are generic metric screws (torx plus). just make sure the length is the same

yes as long as you dont loosen the two bolts attaching the stem to the fork steer tube. If you do loosen those you just have to rest the headset tension. using the bolt you wish to remove

Yes, just don’t tighten it too much. Stop as soon as you feel some resistance.
(if your steering has gone tight, you’ll know why)

Yes, I replaced my headset cap with a compass.
