Been on the hunt for a used Soma Pescadero frame in my size for a couple years now. When one popped up an hour and half's drive from recently I jumped on it. Been slowly transferring parts over from my old Smoothie (which I loved but on the whole but hated that I was limited to 28mm tires). Been riding this thing to work the past week while I dial the fit and derailleur and man is it such a fun ride. So light and quick accelerating but cushy and smooth for a road bike with the 38 panaracers I've got on it.

Transfered parts:
– wheels: some basic Shimano ones I've had for 6+ years
– cranks: hollow tech something or other with 48 / 34 rings
– pedals: I don't remember, I think I'm gonna replace them
– Front derailleur: Shimano 105 2x
– handlebars: Ritchey venturemax, I think they're 42's
– shifters: microshift 10×2 bar ends (index or friction, set to index)
– saddle: decade old brooks that I may retire soon
– brake levers: TRP's, I freaking love these things. So comfortable and ergonomic
– stem: who cares, it's a stem
– front rack: Soma Mini Champs-Elysees

New parts:
– brakes: Tektro R559 long reach calipers. Jury's out on these. They're noticably more flex than the short reach 105's I had before. But I've got the stock pads in right now and may upgrade to cool stops
– seat post: Thomson setback
– rear derailleur: deore 10 speed
Tires: panaracers gravel something or others in 38mm

  1. Oh, I should’ve said, gearing is 10 speed 48 / 34 with an 11-34 cassette.

  2. ohneEigenschaften01 on

I also am not totally satisfied with r559s on a 650b conversion. But I think it’s about the way I set them up, too close to the rim such that I don’t get to pull the levers fare before the pads make contact. I end up having to squeeze the levers uncomfortably hard while they’re still pretty far from the handlebar. Can you imagine what I’m saying?

Anyway, maybe the TRPs mate better with the calipers? Or I need to put some slack in the cables.

Kool stop salmon pads were a noticeable upgrade.
