It’s about allocation of weight. By going carbon weight can be allocated to other priorities (eg frame strengthening or alternate component)

Frame weight and strength, and components weight have a measurable quantity.

You can make comparably specced bikes for 10lbs less on both designs these days… 130/120 SC blur can be 24lbs, and a long travel carbon hard tail can be around 22lbs.

My karate monkey is much lighter than my full suspension.

If weight is the most important metric, race a 17# rigid singlespeed in the Downieville Classic.

I find it hilarious that people think a light bike matters.

That’s kinda nuts tho. Regardless of the linkage missing and such. If it is such a jumping off point, why does it matter? Are carbon frames far more durable?

Santa Cruz’s aren’t exactly light amongst their peers.

My steel full squish (REEB SST) is lighter than my steel hard tail (Honzo ESD). 😀

Are you comparing the weight of the frame or full bikes?
The top carbon hardtail from Santa Cruz is 22lbs…

Mine too, by a lot. Full sus with DH tires vs hardtail with XC tires makes a biggg difference. 33lbs vs 19lbs

Hard tail vs full squish. Not that surprising.
