The derailleur hanger broke. Assuming the derailleur is still okay it shouldn’t be too expensive to fix but getting the right one can be a pain so I suggest working with your local bike shop.

  2. Sounds like the limits on the rear derailleur were not set correct, ie. that thing in your hand got sucked into the spoke when u shifted to a low gear and ripped off.

Looks like the derailleur hanger is replaceable, cant 100 percent tell but looks like it. That piece is designed to fail over the frame getting ruined.

Might need a new rear derailleur
Maybe a new back wheel or at least a truing if it ate that piece.

Take it to a bike shop.
Or watch a bunch of youtube vids and try to fix yourself,  i recommend the first option tho… good luck.

  3. The blue-tinted piece of metal that broke is called a derailleur hanger. (The derailleur is what changes gears). The hangers are designed to fail more easily than the bike frame if something hits or pulls on the derailleur. By breaking, it has essentially served its purpose and protected your frame.

You will need to purchase a replacement derailleur hanger. Different bikes use different shapes and designs, some of which look very similar. Unless you are willing to do a fair bit of research to make sure you get the right one, it would be wise to take the bike to a local bike shop and ask for their help in getting a new one.

More than likely improper shifting, usually caused by shifting under load. Take your bike to your local shop and if the derailleur isn’t borked (only looks like the cage is bent) that it should be around a $50 fix. While you’re there I’d ask them to explain to you how it could potentially happen and how it can be avoided in the future

Hangar is cooked my friend. Bike shop, unless you want to do it yourself. Google bike make model and derailleur hangar.

  6. All the above Plus: while you’re at the shop, have them check your chain’s stretch. To me, your gears look to be slightly “leaning,” and the valleys dont look round. All signs of a bad chain. It’s all part of riding. Try to enjoy the mechanics as well as the ride. Petal on.

  7. This happens often in MTB. Example:

but in road bikes could be for a bad alignment or adjustement on your groupset. Your LBS can help you to prevent this, or learn in youtube some mechanic for your bike

Happened to me once when a chainlink broke, ripped the derailleur hanger right off and the rest landed in the spoke.

I was just happy it did happen at low speed, would have been bad at high speed as the chain just blocked the rear wheel …

Be glad it didn’t happen at 20 mph, and it didn’t trash your spokes and carbon fiber frame. BTDT
