There has been a lot of attempts with oval crank sets from different manufacturers; trying to optimize the power output .

If you want to opt for normal circles just look for the right BCD chainrings and you’re good to go

There have been various versions of non-round chainrings, they’re still pretty common.
The idea is that there are portions of the peddling cycle where you have more power than other parts of the cycle, so it uses the shape of the chainring to basically change the gearing slightly to make it harder/easier to pedal.
